“We’ve only got ourselves to blame for the loss
HSV fell to their first home defeat of the season against SC Paderborn in a result which ended their seven-game winning run at the Volksparkstadion. The players and head coach expressed their frustration after the game.
Sebastian Schonlau: It goes without saying that we wanted to get our eighth home win in a row. We started well and took an early lead, but we let Paderborn get back into the game. We’ve only got ourselves to blame for the loss. We tried to bounce back at the end of the game but luck wasn’t on our side. We want to have more than 30 points in the league going into the winter break – that’s our goal. If we want to do this, we need to get the three points next weekend.
Laszlo Benes: We went in front early on, but didn’t put enough pressure on the opposition after that. It meant that Paderborn were able to break through on a few occasions. At the end of the day, we didn’t play well enough today, even though we created a couple of good opportunities at the death. Obviously, the loss is tough to take and it means that I can’t really be happy with my goal.
Robert Glatzel: We imagined out last game at home of the year going differently. It hurts to lose like this. It’s hard to say why we lost, since we had good chances after they equalised and should’ve taken the lead again. Instead, we conceded another goal out of nowhere and it shocked us a bit. We had a couple of opportunities at the end of the game, but we were unlucky with our finishing. It’s really tough to take.
"We made too many individual errors in attack and in defence." Tim Walter
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We started well and managed to win several balls, as expected. We pressed hard and scored a nice goal as well. We then conceded the equaliser from out of nowhere, but didn't let it knock us off our rhythm. We still managed to create chances of our own, but that changed in the second half. The second goal we conceded was unfortunate. We tried to find our footing again, but didn't manage to get back into the game, except for in the final minutes when we hit the crossbar twice. It just wasn't enough today.
Tim Walter: It just didn't go our way today. It mirrored our performance in a way, however, because we just made too many individual errors in attack and in defence. That's how we keep denying ourselves from being rewarded for our efforts. That was the case in the cup and today as well. It's tough to put it into words. We started well, but then threw away our lead far too easily. We should have scored at least twice more in the first half. We then went behind after an error. The red cards also contributed to interrupting the flow of the game. We've been knocked down several times before, but we will once again pick ourselves up.
Lukas Kwasniok: We left the pitch victorious today, after 99 hard-fought minutes. It wasn't an undeserved win, but overall it was a relatively evenly-matched game. The pitch also played a part in that. Both sides made several errors. It's therefore almost fitting that the pitch was involved in the situation that decided the game. It was lucky, but sometimes you need luck in order to win at HSV. We don't have any reason to feel ashamed for how this game went.
