“We need more clarity in our game”
The Rothosen were critical of themselves after losing 2-1 to VfL Osnabrück.
Sebastian Schonlau: We didn’t start well, with their first set piece leading to a goal. We were then chasing a way back into the game. It wasn’t the worst thing though, as we still had almost 90 minutes to turn things around. We got the equaliser just before the break and then started the second half with some good energy, before we were too sloppy and chaotic. Although we put a lot of crosses in, the majority of them were all caught by their goalkeeper. Losing in front of a full house is disappointing. We have 10 games to go and are only two points off Kiel. There are 30 points to play for and we’ve shown that we can finish strongly over the last two seasons.
Noah Katterbach: We struggled to get into the game in the first 20 minutes. We then had a lot of attacks where we got to the edge of the box, but couldn’t make that final pass. We simply need to be more clinical and find a way of breaking down teams that sit back against us. There’s no question that the result is massively disappointing. Osnabrück beat us with just three shots.
"For the high standards we have and the quality we possess, we didn’t create enough chances" Robert Glatzel
Robert Glatzel: Aside from the start of the game, we controlled proceedings but didn’t create enough chances. Osnabrück sat very deep and afforded us little space in behind their defence. That’s no excuse though. For the high standards we have and the quality we possess, we didn’t create enough chances. We didn’t do enough with our possession and didn’t get it forward enough. Things were too slow and we barely managed any counter-attacks. We need to find different ways of being successful, like from crosses and passing moves. We’re extremely disappointed, especially because we were at home and our rivals’ results all went our way.
Steffen Baumgart: We need more clarity in our game. It got better during the match after a bad start, but even a 1-1 draw would have been disappointing for us. The main thing that was missing for me was us matching their passion and desire, they are a side fighting for their lives. This is something you have to do in every game. We will obviously analyse the game properly, but we need to question ourselves too. We’ve got 10 games left and it’s in our hands, however just playing good football is not enough. We need to have the right mentality too. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.
Uwe Koschinat: Today’s win was a collective effort, made possible by the team’s hard work. We started well and surprised HSV a little bit, before then limiting ourselves to just defending well against a side that kept on getting better. As a result of that, we only had a few chances of own. The pressure kept increasing as the second half went on and our only aim was to stop them playing. We then had a man sent off and knew that we’d probably only be able to hold on for a point at best, but sometimes in football the opposition lose their focus a bit when they have an extra man and we took full advantage of that to win the game.
