“This win means much more to us emotionally than just three points”
After the dramatic 3-2 away victory at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, the HSV players were ecstatic about the game, the three points and the presence of 20,000 Rothosen fans who had travelled to the German capital. Here’s all the reaction from the match.
Emir Sahiti: That was an incredible game and a really important win for us. We gave our all and I’m just happy that we could reward these thousands of fans with a victory. It was obviously great for me to have played a part in this with my goal. I used my pace to get through one-on-one after a great pass from Marco Richter. These situations are my big strength, and luckily I was able to finish that one off. A big win in a big match! I’d like to thank the coach for putting his trust in me.
Ransford Königsdörffer: My mother was in the stands today for the first time ever, which makes me even happier that we won and also that I scored such a great goal. As soon as the ball left my foot, I knew it was a good strike. The win is obviously the most important thing though, and we’re over the moon after this game. There are still a lot of matches to go however, so now it’s about keeping going and not letting up.
Jonas Meffert: Although obviously we’ve only got three points for this win, it means much more to us emotionally. Hertha made three changes after going 2-0 down and suddenly, it was 2-2. We then looked around and asked ourselves what was going on. To react in that manner though, and still win the match with that brilliant goal from Emir, already makes it very emotional. Add to that that Hertha are a very good team and have top quality players who can play some really great stuff. We deserved our win in the end, because we were clinical. It was down to our unbelievable fans too. They made this into a home game.
“It was just a wonderful moment to be able to celebrate this victory with the fans in the stands” Miro Muheim
Miro Muheim: It was an incredible atmosphere. 20,000 HSV fans travelled here. That’s unbelievable! It was just a wonderful moment to be able to celebrate this victory with the fans in the stands, and all that after this dramatic game of football. Hertha were all over us at the start, but we improved as the game went on and in my opinion deserved to take the lead. I’m proud of the team for being able to get ourselves back in front after it went back to 2-2, because we gave absolutely everything again. That’s obviously amazing and gives us even more confidence.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: This game today had everything. Bags of quality, fierce intensity, great goals – the spectators were treated to something special, particularly in the second half. We had more control of the match after getting through the first 20 minutes, regained our confidence and then took the lead with those two goals. At the end, we hit back once again and got the three points. That’s the most important thing.
Merlin Polzin: This match must have been great fun for all of the spectators to watch. Our aim is always to make sure the HSV fans are on board with how their team play and what they represent. I’m therefore pleased overall, but there are a few small things we’ll have to discuss during the week. For example, we struggled against Hertha’s man-to-man press, particularly at the start. I’m very happy though with the effort the team put in and how we managed to raise our game. We wanted the three points, and we’ve got them, so we’re going home feeling good, as are our 20,000 fans. From tomorrow though, we keep working.
Cristian Fiel: It’s just really disappointing to have lost this game. We started well and had good chances, yet were 2-0 down after an hour. We fought our way back into it really well, but it was devastating to concede from that counterattack at the end. We wanted to win the game after getting it to 2-2, but we were a bit too eager and were eventually punished for that. We tried everything and the team gave everything, but in the end it wasn’t enough for the three points.
