"On the balance of how each half panned out, a draw seems a fair result"
Despite taking the lead after a strong performance in the first half, Hamburger SV ultimately ended up sharing the points in a 2-2 draw with Hannover 96. Read on for all the post-match reaction.
Silvan Hefti: It's tough to put it into words right after the game has finished, especially because we scored to make it 2-2 late on. On the one hand, we can be pleased with the point, but on the other, based on how strong we were in the first half, we could have taken more by putting Hannover under more pressure. Hannover pressed us hard from the start, but after five minutes we'd managed to find our shape defensively. We then won our tackles from then on, created chances and played with confidence. I'm obviously delighted to have scored my first goal for HSV. I'd have rather celebrated it with three points, but I'm still proud about it.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We were disciplined and aggressive in the first half and did well to put them under pressure. We were missing a clinical touch in front of goal today – we didn't follow up and weren't direct enough in finishing our chances. Considering the fact that we were trailing at one point, we can be satisfied with the result. It was hard work to fight back against such a strong opponent. The fact that we managed to do that is testament to our mentality and our desire to give everything we have to not lose. You could see how passionately we played over the full 90 minutes. Now, our focus will shift immediately to our next game on Friday, which I'm looking forward to.
"Our aim is always to win. If we're unable to do that, then we'll gladly take the point and remain positive" Ludovit Reis
Ludovit Reis: We kept seeking to play our game. Hannover were also pushing to score and created chances for themselves. The way we conceded was a bit unlucky, but in the end, all that matters is that the ball is in the back of the net. It was crucial that Dompé equalised for us from the free kick late on. Our aim is always to win. If we're unable to do that, then we'll gladly take the point and remain positive. That's our mindset. Overall, the chemistry within the team is strong and we have a clear plan that we're pursuing together. We're a great team with a lot of quality. Next week, we have another chance to give it our all again.
Sebastian Schonlau: We played well in the first half, both in attack and in defence. We deservedly took the lead, but then had to get a second goal. The second half wasn't as dominant. We conceded after a bit of pinball inside the box and Hannover did well from that point on. Both teams scored really nice goals as well during this phase. It was important that we managed to come back from 2-1 down in order to take a point from this game. It's easy to say afterwards that we should have been more direct and simple in our play in the first half, but it's also extremely difficult to make split-second decisions. All things considered, the lads did well.
"The important thing after something like that though is that we provide a good response " Merlin Polzin
Merlin Polzin: We needed something to go for us in order to get a foothold in the game. After the goal, however, we got into the opposing half with much more regularity and began to do what we had set out to. My main disappointment is that we didn’t manage to score any more goals which we certainly could have done during that phase especially since it’s never going to be easy against a solid Hannover defence. We have to take the blame for that. After the changes that Hannover made, we found it difficult to rediscover our rhythm and just gave too much away. The goal to make it 1-1 had been coming but it then when it did arrive it was ultimately just quite unlucky. We tried to fight back in the period that followed but went behind due to a stunning goal. The important thing after something like that though is that we provide a good response and the lads did that, giving everything they’ve got. Jean-Luc then came up with an absolute wondergoal – a clear example of why we are so happy to have him here. He did the team a big favour. On the balance of how each half panned out, a draw seems a fair result.
Andre Breitenreiter: The draw seems fair based on what we saw over the course of 90 minutes. We started pretty well before HSV began to dominate and pile on the pressure leading to a deserved first goal. Their quality was evident even despite having a number of players missing. They are a really strong side and we were far too passive and allowed ourselves to be taken control of. We were somewhat lucky that it was only 1-0 at the break which makes the second-half reaction all the more pleasing. That was a testament to how we try to go about things. We switched to a 4-3-3 formation and brought on Rabbi Matondo, who can dribble at speed and that suited us well. We were clearly the better side after the restart and rightly equalised and then took the lead. What you then have to make sure you do is get over the finishing line. However, with a free-kick like that you just have to applaud because it was so well hit. In the end, 2-2 seems about right.
