“That was a great result for us”
HSV cruised into the second round of the DFB-Pokal after inflicting a comprehensive 7-1 defeat over SV Meppen on Sunday evening, which proved to be a success story for not only the team as a whole, but also for a number of individual players.
David Selke: We went into the game with our heads screwed on, pressed them right up until the end, and never lost concentration. That’s just brilliant, and I have great respect for the lads. We got off to a strong start with both goals in the first half. I’m personally really pleased to have scored, not because it was a response to the negative chanting in the stadium, but because it was my first goal for HSV.
Silvan Hefti: We're really happy to have progressed into the second round following today’s win. Playing in the first round is never easy - favourites are always known to stumble at the first hurdle. I’m proud of the team for playing so well from the offset. When the scoreline remains 0-0 for a long time, anything can happen, so both of our goals in the first 30 minutes were really important.
Robert Glatzel: It was a great feeling to be involved today and to have got on the scoresheet. That was a superb result for us. Everyone should be happy, not only for the team as a whole, but also for multiple individual achievements. The game was going in our favour towards the end, which was obviously ideal for me getting some minutes.
Immanuel Pherai (Man of the Match): This is my first trophy, so will get a special place on the shelf. With regards to my first goal, I spotted a gap in the corner and got a good connection on the ball. It was important that we maintained our standard and didn’t drop off, which was the key to success today.
Steffen Baumgart: Our aim was to progress into the next round, which we achieved with the win today. Regardless of the result, we played really well, aside from the opening stages, after which we started to score more and more goals. It was clear that we need every single one of the lads today, not just those who are in the starting XI. We’re happy to have such a big squad for that reason.
Baumgart on Selke: We realised that his presence on the pitch wouldn’t be taken so well, but we decided to bring him on anyway and he showed a good reaction. However, we made sure to not cross any lines with it.
Lucas Beniermann: We started strong thanks to the incredible atmosphere in the stadium. However, their set pieces threw us off our rhythm. Five of their seven goals came from or after set pieces, which is frustrating and something we need to work on. I do think, however, that there were points where we played good football and were able to find our way out of pressure.
