Selke brace hands HSV last-gasp victory in Münster
Hamburger SV defeated Preußen Münster 2-1 thanks to a brace from striker David Selke. The Rothosen’s hero on the night scored a penalty in the fourth minute of added time to secure the win for his side.
HSV will take three points back to Hamburg with them as they beat Preußen Münster 2-1 on Friday night (7th February). In front of a sold-out crowd at the Preußenstadion, HSV fell behind after Frenkert put the hosts in front after 24 minutes. They managed to work their way back into the game, however, and Selke got them back on level terms in the dying embers of the first half. HSV continued to set the tone after the break and hit the woodwork twice, before Selke was brought down in the box in added time. He stepped up to take the resulting penalty and converted to give his side a well-deserved three points.
First the equaliser ...
Head coach Merlin Polzin made four changes to the side that started in the 2-2 draw against Hannover 96, handing a starting XI debut to Stange in the process. The 17-year-old seized his opportunity after being named in the side at the expense of Jean-Luc Dompe, who was late for a team meeting after a misunderstanding, and was involved in almost all of the Rothosen’s attacks in the opening exchanges. HSV’s best chances fell to Selke, however, who was wearing a mask after sustaining a cheekbone fracture. In the 18th and 45th minute of the match, Richter delivered crosses into the box towards him, but, on both occasions, he just missed the mark. On the whole, the Rothosen looked fairly solid despite the difficult playing conditions. Between the two chances for Selke, however, the defence suffered a lapse in concentration following an already unnecessary corner, and Frenkert capitalised to head the home side 1-0 in front. HSV managed to hit back as the first half drew to a close, though. It was a case of third time’s the charm for Selke: Meffert’s pinpoint cross found the striker lurking in the aggressive, five-man backline, and he headed home to make it 1-1 – a fair result after the first 45.
…and then the winner
HSV picked up where they left off after the break and put Münster under pressure straight away. Their best chance came in the 54th minute, when a well-crafted attack culminated in Richter’s shot hitting the bar. The Rothosen were also denied a huge chance to take the lead after an hour’s play. Selke already had the ball on the spot after a penalty was awarded, when the referee was called over to the VAR screen and eventually overturned the original decision. In the meantime, the hosts had not recorded an effort on goal for almost half an hour and were almost exclusively defending. Suddenly, they had another opportunity to take the lead in the 65th minute through Kinsombi. Shortly afterwards, they had Frenkert to thank again, this time at the other end of the pitch. He scrambled to clear Königsdörffer’s effort off the line after it had already beaten Münster keeper Schenk. Depsite having 70% possession and 12 shots to the home side’s three, Hamburger SV headed into the closing stages on level terms, only to be denied by the woodwork once again. This time, it was Muheim’s half-cross, half-shot that came close to giving HSV all three points. Just like in the first half, though, the Rothosen saved the final flourish for added time. Selke was holding the ball up in the box when he was brought down. He insisted on taking the penalty himself and smashed it into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-1 in the 94th minute. What a finale!
