HSV play out goalless draw against Elversberg
The Rothosen were made to toil throughout their home match against SV Elversberg, which ended 0-0 despite some high-quality chances
On Friday evening (28th March), Hamburger SV could not be separated from SV Elversberg (0-0) to kick off matchday 27 of the 2. Bundesliga season. In the first half, the Rothosen set the tone in front of 56,328 fans, almost a full house at the Volksparkstadion, but just couldn’t break the deadlock. An opening goal continued to remain elusive in the second 45, even though HSV – cheered on by their vocal fans – strove for a winner.

Lots of chances...
HSV head coach Merlin Pölzin made one change to the starting XI from the Rothosen’s last game before the international break: Selke returned to the line-up in place of Königsdörffer after serving a suspension. In the 14th minute, the top scorer in the 2. Liga (17 goals) was the intended target of a Mikelbrencis cross which inadvertently ended up as more of a shot, deflecting off the crossbar and out of play. This was the only highlight of an even first 15 minutes, but it set off a sequence of more HSV chances. Karabec tried his luck from around 16 yards out, and shortly afterwards Selke forced Elversberg keeper Kristof into a save with an effort from close range.
In the home side’s goal, Heuer Fernandes was called into action for the first time in the 26th minute, parrying Schnellbacher’s bouncing, long-range effort away from danger. The next double chance to make it 1-0 fell to the Rothosen after around half an hour of play. However, both Selke’s curling shot from the edge of the six-yard box and Reis’ close-range header went just wide of the target. Elversberg then went up the other end of the pitch and had two top chances denied by Heuer Fernandes. He first spared right-back Mikelbrencis’ blushes who deflected a cross goalwards which would have snuck in at the near post were it not for a sharp reflex save from HSV’s number 1. Then, he tipped Neubauer’s powerful shot over the bar (41’). After a slow start dominated by tactics, the scoreline read 0-0 – but an entertaining 0-0 – at the break.

…but no goals
The second half picked up where the first left off: with two chances in quick succession. Directly after the restart, Sahiti found himself in a promising position and looked destined to give the hosts the lead, before Pinckert put in a last-ditch tackle and deflected his effort away from danger. The resulting corner found Selke at the back post, but he couldn’t test the opposition goalkeeper. Around 15 minutes later, captain Reis neutralised a threat on the HSV goal by winning possession back just as his opposite number Fellhauer was lining up a shot. Directly afterwards, it was once again up to Heuer Fernandes to preserve his clean sheet and the Rothosen’s shot stopper got his hands to Asllani’s shot on goal. Polzin made his first changes around the hour mark, first bringing on Königsdörffer for Karabec, before making a triple substitution a few minutes later. Schonlau replaced Hadzikadunic, who looked to have picked up a shoulder injury, and pulled on the captain’s armband. Richter and Mebude took the places of Reis and Sahiti to try and make an impact on a completely even game.
Just after coming off the bench, Richter hit the woodwork for the umpteenth time this season. He was left cursing his luck in the 78th minute, as his venomous strike from the edge of the box smashed against the bar. The fans would have surely been ready to celebrate four minutes later, too, but the visitors managed to scramble Selke’s header off the line (82’). It would be the masked man’s last action in the game before he sprinted to the sideline and offered some motivating words for strike partner Glatzel. The Volksparkstadion enthusiastically welcomed the reigning 2. Liga top scorer to the pitch and had been trying to suck the ball into the net for a while by that point. The Rothosen, spurred on by their fans, looked to force a winner in the six minutes of added time, but ultimately couldn’t break the deadlock against SV Elversberg, who have only conceded eight away goals away from home all season. Sharing the spoils with Elversberg means that HSV are still the only professional team in Germany who ate unbeaten at home this season.
