HSV lose 4-2 in dramatic game against Kiel
The Rothosen came back to level the game at 2-2 thanks to a Glatzel brace, but ended up losing 4-2 to Holstein Kiel after a wild finish to the game.
Hamburger SV lost 4-2 away at Holstein Kiel on Saturday (11th November). A frenetic game developed in front of a fiery crowd of 15,000 fans at a sold-out Holstein-Stadion, with HSV 2-0 down with 60 minutes played. The Rothosen fought back to draw the game level at two apiece in this north German clash through two Glatzel headers in the 71st and 80th minutes, but then went on to lose the game late on in a dramatic final period. HSV conceded twice on the counter while trying to win the game and eventually fell to a 4-2 defeat in a crazy game of football.
HSV fight back...
HSV head coach Tim Walter had to ponder his team selection going back to his old club, with a number of players unavailable, especially in defence. At least Ramos was back fit again at centre-back and he returned straight back into the Rothosen’s back-four after his injury lay-off. Ramos and the back-four were straight into the action, with Holstein starting the game brightly, pressing high early on and looking to get forward with the ball.
HSV went into the game with exactly the same approach meaning that both teams cancelled each other out a little bit in the opening stages of the game – until one move changed the game. Muheim didn’t see Holtby creep up behind him and caught him as he tried to clear the ball. Referee Aytekin pointed to the spot, with Skrzybski coverting to give KSV a lead after 20 minutes. KSV then set up deeper and were very compact in defence, giving the Rothosen hardly any room in which to attack. This also opened up spaces for Kiel on the counter, and Arp twice went close to doubling the lead against his former club, but first Ramos and then Muheim cleared nearly off the line, with Heuer Fernandes already beaten (37’, 41’). At the other end, HSV had a couple of good opportunities shortly before half time through a Glatzel header and cross-cum-shot from Dompe, but they went into half time trailing by a goal.
… but lose in the end
HSV didn’t seem initially to find their rhythm after the break, with Kiel having three dangerous chances in the first five minutes of the second half. Soon after that, the Rothosen found their feet again, with Glatzel rattling the crossbar with a powerful header following a cross from Mikelbrencis in the 52nd minute. But instead of the scoreline reading 1-1, it was soon 2-0 to the hosts, with Kiel making the most of their next chance and their top-scorer Pichler finding the back of the net in the 57th minute after being played through by Holtby.
But Tim Walter’s side didn’t let this set back discourage them and continued to play forward, getting back in the game through a couple of headers. Having hit the crossbar earlier, Glatzel headed home two crosses from Muheim and Jatta to turn the game around in less than 10 minutes and make it 2-2. At this point, Hamburg had the momentum and accordingly went searching for a third goal in the final ten minutes – and were heavily punished for it. In the 83rd minute, Kiel countered through Holtby and Arp, with the ball finding its way to substitute Porath, who ran through one-on-one against Heuer Fernandes and finished to give Kiel the lead once again. The home side didn’t allow HSV to get away from them, and with HSV pushing for an equaliser, Kiel launched another quick counterattack, with Sterner, who had come on as a substitute, finishing from the edge of the box to make it 4-2 and put the result beyond any doubt. HSV had a couple of late chances through Benes and Jatta which were well-saved by Kiel ’keeper Weiner, but after seven minutes of additional time HSV’s loss was confirmed in front of a breathtaking atmosphere created by both set of fans.
