Convincing 3-0 win at 1. FC Nürnberg
A Dompe double and a red card for the hosts set Hamburger SV on course for victory in the early stages in Franconia, before Glatzel put the gloss on the win and scored the visitors’ third.
Hamburger SV secured a 3-0 victory away at 1. FC Nürnberg on Matchday 28 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga 2 season on Saturday (5th April). Dompe (9’) gave the Rothosen the lead in front of the 47,300 in attendance at the Max-Morlock-Stadion before they gained a numerical advantage after Antiste was sent off in the 16th minute. The away side continued to apply the pressure and found a second through Dompe once again (37’) but missed a good chance for a third just before the half-time whistle. Despite squandering several decent opportunities in the second half, a third goal finally came for HSV as Glatzel headed home (84’) to the delight of the travelling support. The win moves Merlin Polzin’s side to 52 points and into first place in the league standings.

Excellent Dompe...
Head coach Polzin made three changes to the side which began the goalless draw against SV Elversberg. Hadzikadunic (shoulder), Meffert (broken nose) and Selke (back) were replaced by skipper Schonlau, Poreba and Königsdörffer. The away side were dressed in all-white, as referee Gerach didn’t allow HSV to play in their special kit which they had planned to wear for this game. Despite this unexpected dress, the ‘Rothosen’ opened the scoring early, as Dompe drilled home a rebound via an unfortunate deflection off Lubach. The Frenchman’s opener was HSV’s 18th goal of the season scored in the opening 15 minutes, and there was to be a second key moment in the early stages, as Antiste went studs up into a challenge on Elfadil. Referee Gerach went to the screen and upgraded his original decision of a yellow card to a red, giving the attacker his marching orders. Now a man to the good, HSV continued to get forward, having particular success down the left flank and through goalscorer Dompe, who tested FCN ‘keeper Reichert on two occasions following some sensational dribbling.
His opposite man Daniel Heuer Fernandes was first called into action on the half-hour mark, as he stretched out a foot to deny Karafiat in a one-on-one scenario. A warning sign to HSV: despite their lead and dominance, this game was far from over. Dompe evidently took this to heart, and cut in off the wing before firing into the far corner to make it 2-0! The double goalscorer, who was bursting with enthusiasm by this point, received envious jeers from the Nürnberg crowd every time he was on the ball. However, his two goals more than quietened down the home support and ensured his team took a two-goal lead into the break, with Karabec, Königsdörffer and Sahiti all narrowly missing out on adding a third with some decent efforts.

…and a great moment for Glatzel
Neither side made a change at the halfway stage, and not much changed in terms of the pattern of the game. Dompe continued to torment the Nürnberg players as the focal point of the HSV attack, who continued to spurn good opportunities. First, Königsdörffer could only find the side netting after some neat combination play with Reis, then Karabec placed his shot just wide of the right post, before Sahiti also missed the target from twelve yards on the hour mark. Coach Polzin reacted quickly and brought on fresh legs in attack in the form of Richter and Glatzel, but the latter was also unable to find the back of the net initially, as he couldn’t head home from a Dompe corner. Even the double goalscorer failed to seal his hat-trick from two promising positions. On 70 minutes, HSV had made ten attempts on goal in the second half to Nürnberg’s zero, but they remained unable to find that long-overdue third goal.
Midfield engine Reis too was denied that sought-after third goal as a nice counter from the visitors was ended by a stunning Reichert save. The stars finally aligned with HSV’s 13th second-half attempt in the 84th minute, as they got that all-important third goal. Getting on the end of a Dompe corner, Glatzel rose spectacularly and powerfully headed the ball into the back of the net in true striker’s fashion. It was Glatzel’s eighth goal of the season (in just nine games) and his first after a five-month spell on the sidelines through injury. The 31-year-old duly celebrated his comeback goal with the more than 7,500 HSV supporters in attendance. A few minutes later, HSV were able to celebrate the three points, which were never really in danger, as the final whistle went and the Rothosen temporarily rose to the top of the league.
