Ambrosius gives HSV first friendly win of new campaign
Stephan Ambrosius scored the only goal of the game against Hansa Rostock, as Klaus Gjasula and Amadou Onana made their debuts in a HSV shirt.
First time lucky for Daniel Thioune, as the 46-year-old was able to enjoy a win in his first game on the sidelines for HSV, as Stephan Ambrosius scored a late winner against Hansa Rostock on Sunday afternoon (9th August) at the Volksparkstadion. The defender rose highest to nod in Aaron Hunt’s in-swinging 90th-minute corner, one of few clear-cut chances from the hour and a half of action under the sweltering Hamburg sun. Having completed such a small proportion of the pre-season preparation, the new man at the helm was satisfied with what he saw: “After four days of training, with the areas of emphasis we had, I can be happy with the result. Our counter-attacking play was an area that impressed me today,” summarised Thioune after the final-whistle with HSVtv. Rostock manager Jens Hartel was able to see little of his side’s attacking prowess, thanks to industrious displays from a newly-formed back four including matchwinner Ambrosius (21) and Jonas David (20), and new signings Amadou Onana (18) and Klaus Gjasula in defensive midfield.
Korbinian Vollmann was the only member of the travelling contingent who was able to test Tom Mickel in the HSV goal in the second half, yet Mickel was able to bat away his two long-distance efforts with ease, before clearing with his head with Vollmann seemingly sent clean through on goal. Lukas Hinterseer enjoyed the best chance of the second period for the hosts in the 76th minute, yet failed in his attempt to square the ball to Sonny Kittel, when an effort on goal would have been the wiser option. “Naturally we wanted to play a bit better with the ball than we did today, but that will come in time. What was most important this afternoon was implementing what we had talked about in training,” added Thioune, satisfied with the Rothosen starting his reign with a clean sheet.
