“The atmosphere was indescribable”
Hamburger SV were very pleased with their performance after a deserved 1-0 win in the derby against FC St. Pauli, and were eager to praise the unbelievable support of the Volksparkstadion.
Sebastian Schonlau: It’s a great feeling. You live for matches like these and for moments like the full-time scenes in front of the Nordtribüne. The fans were absolutely incredible today. From the first whistle, there was absolutely no doubt as to whose home it was. We were able to emphasise that as a team, as we had a clear plan both with and without the ball. We knew exactly what St. Pauli wanted and implemented our plan well. We’ve earned the right to celebrate today’s derby victory. A win like this speaks for itself. Nevertheless, we’re still four points off third with two games to go, so a lot needs to happen yet.
Robert Glatzel: It wasn’t easy. It was a real war of attrition that we had to endure today. We defended well out of possession and also created good chances for ourselves. At the end, we got our reward. There may have been a slight touch for my goal that got disallowed, but it’s not a foul for me. You can see that from my reaction. I never expected the goal to be chalked off. Both the team, the fans and the city showed that we’re not going down without a fight. It’s a really great feeling to be able to give the fans something back – especially after a disappointing last few weeks. The atmosphere was indescribable. We’re the most unique team in the league. Even though it’s been a disappointing season, the fans were on it and supportive before kick off and until the last minute. That’s something really special.
Matheo Raab: It feels amazing. Both the pre- and post-match atmosphere showed what this game meant to the fans. We were able to give them something back compared to the last weeks. The stadium banners were incredible – that shows what sort of a club this is, and how many people are behind us. The atmosphere gave me goosebumps and it’s so much nicer to have put in a performance that has pleased our fans. It was hugely important for us all. We did our homework, and we want to do that in our last two games. We’ll celebrate winning the derby today, and we want to win gain next week and hope others slip up.
"We wanted to show who the city belongs to, and we did that today." Jonas Meffert
Jonas Meffert: We’re unbelievably happy. Today was an amazing day. We played very well and deserved to win. The atmosphere was incredible. The table doesn’t matter to us today. Today, it was all about the derby, that’s what our focus was on. We wanted to show who the city belongs to, and that’s what we did. It’s all out of our hands now, unfortunately, because we’ve dropped too many points ourselves over the course of the season.
Immanuel Pherai: It was a special game and an extraordinary atmosphere. The fans were already in the ground by the warm-up, singing our name. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Our plan was to be attacking, it was our turn today. It was a deserved victory, and now, we’ve got two games which we need to win, and then we’ll see what happens.
Ludovit Reis: From the first minute, it was a special atmosphere. The game was fiery throughout. We always stayed together as a team, had a clear plan and implemented it well. You can see the quality in our team. We’re good enough to win every game and need to continue doing so. There’s no point in looking back at what’s gone, but rather to look forward.
Steffen Baumgart: We’re really pleased with the victory. We played well, especially without the ball – that’s why St. Pauli couldn’t create the chances they wished to. We should have gone into the break with a one-goal lead, because that goal was fine for me. However, it was a balanced first half on the whole, and neither side was really ‘on top’. We scored in the second half from a set piece, and then kept everything our opponent threw at us out and secured what was a deserved victory.
