"Based on how the game went, it's a fair result"
HSV found themselves trailing 1-0 at SSV Ulm, before coming back to net an equaliser through Davie Selke. A red card for Daniel Elfadli meant the Rothosen were a man down for the final 30 minutes of the match. Read on for all the post-match reaction to the 1-1 draw.
Sebastian Schonlau: The coach had clear words for us at half time and made two, three adjustments to our tactics, as we came back out with an entirely different energy. We quickly managed make it 1-1 and find our way back into the game and continued to play well even after going a man down. If we hadn't hit the post, we could have even managed to win this game. The positives we can take from this are that we stuck together as a team and that we were able to come back, although our aim was to win the game, which we didn't manage to do.
Davie Selke: The first half wasn't good, there's no denying that. We had a good game plan, but just didn't manage to implement it or generate any threat as a result. The coaching staff made the right adjustments at half time, so that we played far better in the second half and we were quickly able to make it 1-1. In the end, we were just a bit unlucky given that we hit the post twice. Today showed once again that we had to first concede before finding our way into the game, which cannot be the case. We have the quality to dominate a game like this right from the start, which we didn't manage to do today – we can be much better.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We weren't able to have any influence on the game in the first half and afforded them far too much space. As a team, we didn't defend well on the goal we conceded. We made a few adjustments at half time that managed to give us some new energy and saw us rewarded with the equaliser. Even with just 10 men, we really wanted to win and managed to create chances for ourselves. It's a bit frustrating because there was more in it for us tonight, especially given our improved performance in the second half.
"We deservedly scored an equaliser, in addition to having a few more chances." Merlin Polzin
Silvan Hefti: The first half wasn't good, but the second was better. We need to hold ourselves accountable, because we should have done better from the start. Overall, we did well as a team after going down to 10 men and even had opportunities to score, but were unlucky to hit the post. Unfortunately, it just wasn't enough to win today, which is annoying.
Merlin Polzin: We didn't get off to a good start today like we'd envisioned. It was far from what we had set out to do. For us, it then became about finding solutions. I spoke sternly to the team at half time, because I wasn't happy with what I'd seen. We spoke about it and made some adjustments. Those allowed us to start generating more of a threat on goal and we deservedly scored an equaliser, in addition to having a few more chances than them. The red card then changed the game again, but we still managed to come extremely close to scoring again through Davie. Based on how the game went, it's a fair result.
Thomas Wörle, Ulm head coach: We played extremely well during the first half. We kept HSV from creating chances, were aggressive, pressed them hard and worked to create opportunities to score for ourselves. The second half saw a shift in momentum, and we were unfortunate to concede. That allowed HSV a way back into the game. Then, there was a period where the match could have gone either way. After all that, the first half didn't look so good in comparison. With the extra man, we were able to create slightly more chances for ourselves. It'd frustrating for us. There was more in it for us today, after such a strong first half.
