Jonas Meffert extends his contract until 2025
The midfielder has extended his contract until the summer of 2025. Director of first-team football, Claus Costa: “He is a crucial for our style of play.”
Jonas Meffert is here to stay! With the captain Sebastian Schonlau having already extended his contract, Hamburger SV have secured another key player for the long run. The 28-year-old midfielder, whose contract would have run out at the end of the season, has signed a new deal until the summer of 2025.
“Meffo is a fundamental component of our game that can have a big influence on the dynamic of a match, thanks to his vision on the pitch and his composure on the ball. On top of this, he has distinguished himself as a reliable team player, who goes about his business with a high degree of integrity on and off the pitch and assumes responsibility. We are very happy that Meffo will stay with us beyond the current season,’ emphasised HSV board member for sport, Jonas Boldt.
Director of first-team football, Claus Costa, added: “Meffo is an important player for us, who has consistently put in good performances over the past two seasons. He is crucial for our style of play; his presence makes those around him play better. You don’t always immediately notice this at first glance, but it becomes particularly obvious when he isn’t playing. He is therefore very significant for our team and is also important to the group with his personality.”
Passing machine, tireless runner, enforcer
“The team, the fans, the city, the coach and my teammates – all of these things motivated me to extend my contract. I’m proud and really happy about it,” explained Jonas Meffert. He reminisced on his time as a HSV player so far: “Working with the coaching staff and the rest of the team has been fun from day one. We’ve developed something here and have become a real team. Going out week after week, fighting for 90 minutes and getting the three points – these things bring me great pleasure.”
Jonas Meffert transferred from Holstein Kiel to Hamburger SV ahead of the 2021/22 season and immediately became a star performer in defensive midfield. The right-footer has played 78 competitive games for HSV so far, scoring one goal and making six assists, but, most importantly, being a constant passing machine, tireless runner and dependable enforcer in front of the defensive line. In addition to this, the man who has made 213 appearances in the second division, continues to assume responsibility on and off the pitch, having occupied the role as vice-captain during the past two seasons and making up part of the team council for the Rothosen this season. “For me personally, it’s all about reaching our main goal. We want to pick up as many points as possible and achieve promotion,” said the man who was born in Cologne, but who has long since found his second home in Hamburg at HSV.
