HSV win final pre-season friendly
In the final friendly before the start of competitive fixtures, Manuel Wintzheimer gave HSV the win with the only goal of the game in the 39th minute.
As part of the seventh edition of the Volksparkfestival, presented by Popp Feinkost, Hamburger SV came out on top with a 1-0 win against FC Basel 1893. The match-winning goal came through Manuel Wintzheimer in the 39th minute, whose strong run was rewarded with a little bit of luck.
Opening the scoring in the first half…
It was the visitors from Switzerland who set the pace at the start of the game and created the first signs of danger. Captain Valentin Stocker and centre forward Arthur Cabral looked to cause damage, but the HSV defence, led by new captain Sebastian Schonlau, held firm. After around 25 minutes, HSV came more into the game and were deserving of the applause from the 4,034 fans in attendance in the Volksparkstadion. After Manuel Wintzheimer and Bakery Jatta (36’) and Tim Leibold (37’) missed chances to open the scoring, Wintzheimer, playing in an advance midfield role, crowned a strong HSV spell with the opening goal in the 39th minute. The attacker benefited from a hint of good fortune as he went through one-on-one. FCB defender Nasser Djiga made a challenge from behind which forced the ball to ricochet off Wintzheimer and beat the goalkeeper. The two sides went into the break with one goal separating them.
… and staying secure at the back in the second
Both teams remained unchanged as they returned for the second half. Basel seemed to have more of a grip on the game again after the break, but could not seriously test HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who was between the posts for the full match after recovering from an adductor injury. At the other end, new signing Robert Glatzel looked to double the lead on 61 minutes, but his powerful volley was pushed over the crossbar by Basel goalkeeper Heinz Lindner. It looked as though the scores would be level around nine minutes later, but Pajtim Kasami was unable to turn home a rebound after Stocker's shot (70'). With the game coming to a close, several substitutions saw the momentum drop and resulted in few chances in the final phases. Therefore, HSV managed to see out the 1-0 win in a game that saw numerous chances at either end. The victory was HSV’s third from four pre-season friendlies, and Tim Walter will hope his side can take their good form into the new season when they kick off the new league campaign away at Schalke 04 on Friday (23rd July, kick-off: 20:30 CEST).
