HSV win 3-1 away at KSC
The Rothosen leapfrogged their opponents Karlsruhe into second in the table after a brace from Dompe and another goal from Selke handed them an away victory.
Hamburger SV won 3-1 away at Karlsruher SC on Sunday, 1st December. At a sold-out Wildpark, Hamburg put in a solid and focused team performance and impressed in both attack and defence. HSV were strong defensively until the end of a very close and even game, and were clinical going forward, earning the team an important three points.
A strong start from HSV …
HSV coach Polzin put his team out in a 4-3-3 formation, and Hamburg were able to carve out a number of good opportunities in the early stages. There were multiple efforts in the first 15 minutes, and two of those were really good chances following Muheim corners. However, Königsdörffer did not have luck on his side on either occasion as he twice fired narrowly wide of the post.
These were two situations where HSV really should have taken the lead, but Dompe made no mistake soon afterwards. After some good pressing from Hamburg, who were dominant and had 75 percent possession in the first 20 minutes, the Frenchman took advantage of some sloppy KSC passing and stayed cool to curl in the opener for HSV. This was definitely deserved, but it also led to a noticeable reaction from the hosts, who were far more involved in the game afterwards. HSV, who had been producing attack after attack early on, were now suddenly pinned back and had to defend their own box on several occasions. In the 36th minute, KSC made it 1-1 from a set piece. Schleusener beat four Rothosen in the air following a Wanitzek corner and headed home the equaliser to make it level at the break. HSV regained the momentum after this wake-up call, but were unable to create any more clearcut opportunities before half time.
… and a perfect ending
After the break, neither side wasted any time in piling forward in search of a second goal. HSV also had luck on their side in these first few minutes of the second period, as Wanitzek was adjudged by VAR to have been narrowly offside when he looked to have put KSC ahead. This ‘goal’ in the 49th minute seemed to spur the Rothosen on, and particularly Dompe, who added his second of the game in the 55th minute.
After a great solo run, Dompe curled a wonderful strike into the corner to put the Rothosen ahead again. This entertaining and high-quality game remained on a knife edge however. Just two minutes after this goal, the hosts struck the woodwork through Conte. This was another example of just how even the match was. It soon became increasingly clear how the final stages would play out. KSC would pile forward and HSV would look to hit them on the counter. That’s exactly how it turned out in the remainder of the game, as the Rothosen stayed strong defensively and conceded very few chances. Just before time, they managed to wrap up the win once and for all after one of these counterattacks. Dompe again kept the ball well before finding Selke at the exact right moment, and the recently-introduced substitute made it 3-1 in the 87th minute. This result was met with elation from both the team and the fans.
