HSV win 3-0 in friendly against 1. FC Phoenix Lübeck
The Rothosen made use of the international break to undertake a friendly match against German fourth-division side Phoenix Lübeck. The game presented a great chance for the team to work on implementing the instructions of the coaching staff, while also being able to celebrate a first goal for Robert Glatzel since the striker’s return from injury.
Hamburger SV defeated Phoenix Lübeck 3-0 as the sides faced off in a friendly on Wednesday (19th March). Robert Glatzel, Davie Selke and Marco Richter bagged the goals for the Rothosen during the match played at the training centre by the Volksparkstadion.
HSV head coach hoped the friendly against an in-form lower-league outfit would provide his team with a chance to continue to develop their game with regard to pressing when out of possession and variability of position when going forward. The game obviously also presented the opportunity for one significant returnee to gain some match practice after Robert Glatzel made his comeback following a five-month injury absence during the 3-0 league win away to Magdeburg, albeit only for the final few minutes.

Glatzel featured from the off against Lübeck and marked the day with a first goal since his return when he coolly dispatched a spot kick into the bottom left-hand corner for 1-0. Hamburg continued to create chances via some fluid link-up play and sweeping forward moves, with Marco Richter passing up the two most notable opportunities before the break. He first had an effort cleared off the line before seeing the next attempt hit the woodwork.
The aluminium once again came to the fore in the second period, with Davie Selke the player to find it in his way this time around after he had come on for Glatzel. That header struck the crossbar before he was able to stick one between the posts on the second time of asking, although only to see the offside flag raised. He was not to be denied the goal to make it 2-0 for long, however, and a no-nonsense finish soon doubled the lead before Richter added some gloss the score line when he swept home the third with 20 minutes to play. “We showed great desire to win today and were able to carry out a lot of what the coaching staff requested,” analysed the goalscorer. “All in all, this friendly went as we had hoped.”
