The Rothosen came away from the ‘Nordduell’ with all three points. Bakery Jatta scored the only goal of the game, with Gui Ramos seeing red in the second half.
Hamburger SV won 1-0 on 2. Bundesliga matchday 4 against Hannover 96 on Sunday evening (26th August). With a sold-out crowd of 49,000 fans at the Heinz von Heiden Arena, 20,000 of them travelling HSV fans, the game often sounded like a home game. Both teams delivered solid performances in the first half, meaning that despite no goals from either side it was an entertaining opening period.
A balanced first half ...
Head coach Tim Walter made one change to the team that started the dominant 3-0 home win against Hertha BSC, with Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer replacing Laszlo Benes. The Slovakia international had been suffering with a cold during the week and it was decided along with the coaching staff that he would miss this game. Walter’s side had to do a lot of defending in the first fifteen minutes of the game, with the home side beginning confidently and getting off a couple of shots from Jannik Dehm (11’) and Marcel Halstenberg (15’). HSV’s found themselves on the attack immediately after this, with Robert Glatzel having a shot well-saved on the turn. The hosts then posed an attacking threat yet again. Nicolo Tresoldi (18‘) missed the target from close range, before goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was called upon to deal with a Leopold freekick (20’).
HSV then started getting on the ball more and were increasingly on the attack. In the 34th minute, they then had an excellent double chance for Ludovit Reis and Robert Glatzel. The Dutch player won the ball off Halstenberg and ran into the box, where ‘keeper Ron-Robert Zieler did well to get down and stop. The ball rebounded into the air and was controlled by Glatzel, who then took a shot which was cleared off the line by Phil Neumann. Two minutes later, Königsdörffer put his header wide after a great cross by Jean-Luc Dompe. At the other end, Tresoldi almost put the hosts ahead with a near post flick, but Fernandes was alert to the danger and a combination of his fingertips and the bar diverted the ball over (40’). The HSV goalkeeper was called upon again in additional time at the end of the first half and made a strong save from Derrick Köhn to keep the scoreline at 0-0 going into the break.
... before Jatta secures all three points for ten-man HSV
There were no changes at half time, and the first dangerous chance of the half went the way of HSV. Jatta laid a Dompe cross down for Königsdörffer, whose shot from close range was deflected over by the Hannover defence (51’). Moments later, HSV made the contest more difficult for themselves, with Gui Ramos bringing down Tresoldi with a tug on the shirt as the last man and receiving his marching orders (53’). The Rothosen had a moment of luck shortly afterwards, with Tresoldi’s shot hammering into the crossbar after Dehm whipped in a cross from the right-hand side (59’). Tim Walter reacted to this and brought on another centre-back in the shape of Stephan Ambrosius, sacrificing a winger in Dompe. Königsdörffer then moved out wide, with Reis and Jonas Meffert playing as a double pivot in front of the back-four.
Defending solidly was the name of the game for the remaining half an hour, with the Rothosen dropping very deep at times and defending compactly, while also trying to pose a threat on the counter and to give the defence some of a respite. In the 69th minute, this worked effectively and HSV took the lead. Glatzel found the ball with space in the box, but couldn’t get his effort away. The ball then fell to Reis on the edge of the box and he laid it on to Bakery Jatta, who fired home with his right foot to send the away fans in the left-hand corner into rapture (69’). 1-0 HSV! With a lead and vocal support behind them, the Rothosen found a second wind and continued to deny the hosts good attacking opportunities. HSV put in a mature defensive performance and Hannover 96 only really had a couple of half chances from Tresoldi and Köhn. The game finished 1-0, with Walter’s side winning a challenging game and successfully defending their lead in the table.
