HSV suffer 2-1 defeat at VfL Osnabrück
Robert Glatzel gave die Rothosen the lead against VfL Osnabrück at the Stadion an der Bremer Brücke, but the hosts turned it around as HSV ultimately lost 2-1.
Hamburger SV lost 2-1 away to VfL Osnabrück on Friday evening (22nd September) on matchday 7 of the 2023/24 season. Die Rothosen got off to a great start, as striker Glatzel put HSV in front in the 12th minute, but VfL hit back and turned the game around before half time with goals from Engelhardt (16’) and Diakhite (40’). The visitors were unable to make the necessary improvements to their performance in the second half to turn the game back around, which meant the scoreline remained how it was before the break, sealing HSV’s second consecutive defeat.
HSV take the lead through Glatzel...
HSV head coach Tim Walter had to do without the injured Muheim and Schonlau, as Heyer and Ramos came into the starting XI which saw HSV line up with four at the back. The back four were straight into the thick of it as Osnabrück made a lightning-fast start, with both Engelhardt and Gyamfi having chances in the first five minutes of the match. However, HSV mercifully struck back with their first real opportunity of the night: Jatta won the ball in midfield, Benes stylishly sent Glatzel on his way, and the latter chipped the ball over goalkeeper Grill, and over defender Ajdini who was hurrying to the goal line to keep out the effort, to make it 1-0 to HSV (12’). The hosts didn’t let the early goal get to them, though, and got right back into attacking mode which led to their equaliser just four minutes later. After Osnabrück forced HSV’s defence into giving the ball away, it eventually ended up at the feet of Engelhardt who slammed the ball home past Ramos and Heuer Fernandes to level the scores. And so, it was all square after a quarter of an hour, and with the scores still level at the half-hour mark, HSV would admit this scoreline served them well. This is because Osnabrück midfielder Wulff narrowly missed a chance to make it 2-1, which Gyamfi then went and did before the goal was disallowed for offside. In the first half, Osnabrück registered 11 shots on goal compared to just four for HSV, and one of these Osnabrück attempts that came in the final 15 minutes of the first half led to their second goal. Heuer Fernandes was able to keep out Tesche’s first effort, who was all alone in front of goal, but centre back Diakhite had followed up to tap home the rebound and give the hosts a 2-1 lead going into half time.
...but in the end, Osnabrück come away with the win
The hosts remained the dominant side after the break. They were making life difficult for the visitors with solid defensive work, tough challenges and quick counter-attacking play. They weren’t able to create a plethora of gilt-edged chances, but Osnabrück did have their fair share of opportunities. Cuisance, Conteh and Ajdini all had chances in the first 30 minutes of the second half, three of the 16 attempts on goal the hosts had by this stage of the game, far more than the five efforts of HSV. However, the visitors turned up the intensity in the final 15 minutes, with Hadzikadunic and Meffert first trying their luck from distance before the final push. This led to VfL being afforded plenty of space in behind which inevitably led to counterattacks. During one of these instances at the start of injury time, Niemann had a real chance to put the game to bed for the home side, but Heuer Fernandes made an excellent reaction save to keep his team in the game. The fourth official signalled that there would be eight additional minutes, so HSV still had time to find an equaliser and to get something out of the game in which they had let their early lead slip. Unfortunately, they were unable to fashion a decent chance against a resolute purple wall, which meant the score remained 2-1, sealing HSV’s second league defeat in a row.
