HSV storm to 4-0 win at Braunschweig
The Rothosen maintained their bid for promotion with a convincing 4-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig. Bakery Jatta and a long-distance effort from Reis added to Glatzel's first-half double.
Hamburger SV produced a fine performance to defeat Eintracht Braunschweig 4-0 on Saturday (27th April). Eintracht had kept clean sheets in three of their last four games, but were powerless to resist as Steffen Baumgart's men put on an attacking masterclass to go 2-0 up within 22 minutes courtesy of a brace from Glatzel. The rest of the game was similarly comfortable for the Rothosen, who put on an assured display to coast to a deserved away win.
Glatzel at the double
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart made two changes from the side which started against Kiel, with Dompe and Poreba returning to the starting XI in place of Öztunali and the injured Van der Brempt.
Hamburg made a rapid start to the game – the Rothosen carved out their first scoring opportunity of the day after just 37 seconds as Königsdörffer narrowly missed out on putting his side in front. That chance proved to be a sign of things to come for HSV, who continued to pile the pressure on their opponents. That pressure proved before long to be too much for the Braunschweig defence to deal with, and in the 10th minute Glatzel was the beneficiary of a wonderful piece of interplay between Pherai and Poreba to slot home the first goal of the game. The hosts briefly threatened an immediate response and had a great opportunity to find one through Phillippe, but before long they would find themselves facing a two-goal deficit. 22 minutes in, Glatzel got his second of the afternoon, this time producing an improvised finish to turn in a cross from Königsdörffer. That goal appeared to be a punch in the gut for the hosts, who were noticeably subdued for the remainder of the half as Baumgart’s men continued to dominate. Glatzel almost completed his hat-trick on the stroke of half-time, but Eintracht ‘keeper Hoffmann produced a fingertip save to keep his side in the game.
A well-earned three points
HSV had to endure a few anxious moments after the break. Braunschweig surged forward in search of a reply, and on 49 minutes believed they had found one – fortunately for the Rothosen, that goal was ruled out for a foul on Raab in the build-up. With around 25 minutes to go, Baumgart made a triple substitution, changing his entire forward three, and that decision proved to be an astute one as the recently-introduced Jatta pounced on Poreba’s deflected effort to make it 3-0. Hamburg were not done there, and could well have increased their advantage through another substitute in Nemeth had his effort not cannoned back off the post. That fourth goal would eventually come in some style as Reis fired in from 20 yards to seal a deserved away win at a sold-out Hamburger Straße.
