HSV record deserved 3-0 home win against SVWW
Hamburger SV came away with a deserved 3-0 home win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Muheim, Benes and Königsdörffer scored the goals as the Rothosen recorded a ninth home win of the season.
Hamburger SV won 3-0 on Sunday (17th March) in the home game against SV Wehen Wiesbaden. The Rothosen were the better team from the very first minute in front of a crowd of more than 55,000 at a sold-out Volksparkstadion and controlled the game from the outset but were unlucky in hitting the woodwork a number of times in the first half. Jatta, Hadzikadunic and Pherai found the post or bar in the way three times in the first half before a deflected shot from Muheim put HSV ahead (33’). The hosts continued to dominate after half time and increased their lead through Benes (51’) and Königsdörffer (85’), giving HSV a deserved home win that means they go into the upcoming international break in third place in the 2. Bundesliga.
Unlucky to hit the woodwork three times…
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart was without Ambrosius, Van der Brempt, Katterbach and Dompe for the visit of SV Wehen Wiesbaden due to injury, while Heyer also missed out due to suspension. Baumgart also decided to tinker with the formation slightly, meaning HSV played more with a back-three in possession, allowing more of an attacking threat right from the very start as the team pushed forward.
Jatta, playing his 200th competitive game for the Rothosen, had already hit the woodwork within a minute, firing a shot against the post, while Hadzikadunic came up from the back in the 21st minute and saw his header turned onto the bar. There was plenty of action in the Wiesbaden box and a minute later Schonlau was knocked over in the box and everyone from a Hamburg perspective thought a penalty would be given. This wasn’t the case, however, meaning despite three extremely dangerous situations in front of the visitor’s goal the game was still level-pegging. It would have been a deserved lead against an SVWW side who looked to sit back and break on the counter, with their best chance coming through a counter in the 11th minute, but Heußer fired wide. HSV finally got their just rewards slightly later in the half. Muheim took aim from well outside the box after having been set up by Benes and his shot deflected off Mockenhaupt’s back, looping up into the far corner to give HSV an overdue lead. The Rothosen continued to pile on the pressure, with Muheim via a freekick and later Pherai, who drilled a shot into the near post, having good opportunities to double the lead. This meant the lead was only 1-0 at half time, but a strong HSV performance was greeted by loud applause from the fans as the team walked off for half time.
… but also scored three goals
HSV remained the dominant side after half time, taking control of the game straight away and taking a crucial step in securing all three points with a moment of brilliance in the 51st minute. Glatzel was fouled on the edge of the box, with Benes cleverly rolling the resulting freekick under the wall and in off the post. A 2-0 lead right to start the second half and a hammer blow for the visitors.
Wiesbaden were slow to recover to this setback, allowing HSV to control the game. It took a while for the lead to become three, with HSV just missing that final pass until Benes provided another moment of magic in the 85th minute, putting the game to rest. His brilliant, whipped ball to the backpost picked out a Königsdörffer run in behind from the left and the substitute slid in to make it 3-0. This put the icing on the cake five minutes from time and HSV managed to play the game out, giving them a deserved home win in front of loud support from the home fans. After two recent defeats in a row this meant the Rothosen go into the international break on the back of a win and as the league’s third-placed side
