HSV lose 1-0 in friendly to Holstein Kiel
Hamburger SV narrowly lost 1-0 to KSV Holstein Kiel in a friendly on Thursday afternoon. Steffen Baumgart described it as “a good test” after an intense 90 minutes.
Hamburger SV were beaten in a friendly by Holstein Kiel on Thursday (5th September). HSV coach Steffen Baumgart took the opportunity to give minutes to a number of players during the international break against the newly-promoted Bundesliga side.
HSV goalkeeper Matheo Raab was back in between the posts for the first time after recovering from pneumonia and made a number of decent saves, though he had no chance with the only goal of the game, scored by Kiel’s Phil Harres in the 57th minute. Lukasz Poreba, with a shot from the edge, and Jean-Luc Dompe, with a curling effort from the left wing, came closest to finding an equaliser late on. The Rothosen had a few decent attacks in the first half, as Davie Selke missed a good chance with his header.
“We can learn a lot tactically from this game and take that into our next matches,” said new signing Marco Richter afterwards. Coach Steffen Baumgart was also satisfied with the day’s work. “It was a good test for both sides, who each played to win. Kiel got the only goal in the end, but our performance was still okay.” Keeper Matheo Raab was pleased to be back on the pitch: “I’ve fully recovered from my pneumonia, I’m 100% fit and happy to be back. Even though the result wasn’t what we wanted, we definitely matched Holstein Kiel out there.”
