HSV held to 1-1 draw in Ulm
HSV came back to equalise through Davie Selke in Ulm, before being denied twice by the woodwork as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Hamburger SV drew 1-1 against SSV Ulm on Saturday afternoon (14th December). A total of 17,000 fans attended the match at the sold-out Donaustadion, as the Rothosen struggled to find their way into the match in the opening minutes. The hosts then went into the break deservedly 1-0 in front, before HSV were able to restore parity early on in the second half. Davie Selke brought the Rothosen level with a header in the 49th minute, and was later unlucky to be denied a second by the woodwork. Jean-Luc Dompé also had an effort hit the post, as HSV narrowly missed out on all three points in Ulm.
A poor opening half
HSV head coach Merlin Polzin made two changes to his starting line-up ahead of the game, with Silvan and Selke coming into the side in place of William Mikelbrencis and Ransford Königsörffer. Selke was able to put Ulm goalkeeper Christian Ortag under pressure a couple of times in the opening half, but those were to be the only chances HSV created before the break. The team struggled to break down Ulm's compact backline, while the hosts managed to make their way up the pitch on several occasions. At the half-hour mark, the hosts had managed four shots to HSV'S zero, before going on to take a deserved 1-0 lead in the 34th minute thanks to a well-struck effort from Aaron Keller.
Denied twice by the woodwork after the break n
Following the change of ends, HSV were able to gain a foothold in the match and started pushing for the equaliser. Polzin had brought on fresh legs in the form of Emir Sahiti and Immanuel Pherai for Jatta and Marco Richter, with the substitutes helping to usher in a more dominant period for the visitors. The Rothosen were eventually rewarded for their efforts, as Dompé and Miro Muheim combined to bring the ball forwards via the left flank, before delivering a cross into the box. Selke was waiting to head it past Ortag, giving HSV the equaliser they had been chasing just four minutes into the second half. It ushered in a back-and-forth period of the game, in which both HSV and Ulm sought to take the lead. A second yellow for Daniel Elfadli (68') also complicated matters for HSV, as they were forced to play with just 10 men for nearly 30 minutes. The Rothosen enjoyed the slightly better chances during this period, but were denied twice by the right post after shots from Dompé and Selke. They could have also been awarded a penalty in injury time after Sebastian Schonlau was fouled inside the area. In the end, the two teams shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
Next up, HSV will host Greuther Fürth in their final game of 2024 on Saturday, 21st December (13:00 CET).
