HSV have to settle for 1-1 draw in Regensburg
After an early setback away to SSV Jahn Regensburg, the Rothosen kept pushing and were at least eventually rewarded for their efforts with a point following Davie Selke’s successfully converted penalty.
Hamburger SV have to settle for a single point after their 1-1 draw away to SSV Jahn Regenburg on Sunday (16th February). 15,000 were in attendance at the Jahnstadion in Regensburg as HSV fell behind despite a positive early display when they were caught out by a counter-attack with Sargis Adamyan ultimately putting the hosts ahead. The visiting side then missed a spot kick before ultimately being able to put one away as Selke scored at the second time of asking to secure at least a point.

A positive but fruitless first half…
Hamburg were on it from the off against bottom-placed club SSV, playing on a tricky surface and faced with an opponent who are nevertheless tough to beat at home. Deliveries into the box from both the left and right flanks threatened an early goal for the away team but shortly after the opening whistle, Jahn made their first break of note with Hottmann sent on his way.
No HSV player was able to prevent him running from his own half and into the Hamburg six-yard box before he cut a pass back for Adamyan from the baseline. He met the ball on the run and the Rothosen suddenly found themselves 1-0 down early on in the game leading to the home defensive set-up becoming even more compact and rigorous. The visitors looked to pass their way to goal but this proved difficult on a surface that was more brown than green. Crosses and shots from distance appeared the most likely route to goal but, although a number of shots were registered, few of these were real clear-cut chances. As a result, Hamburg went into the break frustrated to be trailing 1-0 in spite of their 70% possession and also having won 55% of their tackles with the attempts statistic reading 9-3 in their favour.

...before due reward in the second
Hamburg started the second half in a similar vein to the first. They piled on the pressure and, in the 53rd minute, it produced a result. Dompe was brought down in the penalty area by a combination of two Regensburg players leading to referee Erbst, who would often take centre stage in this second half, pointing to the spot. Selke took on the responsibility, as he had done the previous week in Münster. He struck the ball the same way as he had done that day, which proved the wrong decision as SSV keeper Gebhardt anticipated this to make the save.
The missed opportunity for an equaliser also handed the hosts the momentum, leading to Regensburg’s best phase of the match. They posed more of a threat going forward, having a few shots on target. With a quarter of an hour to go, they looked as good as home and dry for the win when referee Erbst showed Sahiti two yellow cards in the space of two minutes. The first was for a supposed foul and the second for dissent, meaning HSV were down to 10 players for the closing stages. However, offensive substitutions from Merlin Polzin served to reinvigorate his side and they once again upped their intensity. Elfadli was one of those to make a late entrance and it was he who was fouled in the box by Bulic in the 83rd minute before Erbst awarded the visiting team a second penalty of the game. Selke once again grabbed the ball but this time around he got the better of Gebhardt, striking the ball down the middle of the goal to make it 1-1 and rescue a point for HSV away in Regensburg.
