HSV draw 2-2 at Karlsruher SC
The Rothosen turned their half-time deficit into a 2-1 lead before conceding a last-minute equaliser in injury time. Just as against Schalke last weekend, Laszlo Benes and Robert Glatzel secured the goals for Hamburg.
After an emotional 5-3 season-opening win against Schalke, Tim Walter chose to only make one change to his starting line-up. New signing Dennis Hadzikadunic made his competitive debut for HSV, with Stephan Ambrosius starting on the bench.
At the break, the hosts maintained a narrow lead...
The first away game of the season began with both sides looking to attack early on. The 32,000 spectators in the sold-out new BBBank Wildpark watched an even first half between two attacking teams and promising action on both sides. The first big chance of the game came from Marvin Wanitzek, whose shot from distance in the 12th minute was punched away by Daniel Heuer Fernandes. However, Hamburg’s goalkeeper was left helplesstwo minutes later. Following a switch of play by former Germany international Lars Stindl, Philip Heise delivered a low cross into the penalty box, where Fabian Schleusener effortlessly slotted the ball into the back of the net from ten meters out.
After conceding, the Reds quickly regained their composure and their control of the game. Despite this, both sides failed to finish their chances during this period. The next good opportunity for the hosts came from Paul Nebel, whose header flew narrowly to the left of the goalpost after a cross from Jung. After Hadzikadunic’s long-range shot (36'), HSV’s attempts on goal prior the break became increasingly more forceful, however neither Königsdörffer's nor Glatzel's headers found their way into the back of the net. Since Ramos and Glatzel also couldn’t find the Karlsruhe goal after a dangerous corner, the hosts went into the changing rooms with a 1-0 lead.
… before snatching a late equaliser
After the change of ends, the two sides continued to battle it out. Head coach Tim Walter made three changes in the 55th minute, taking off both Königsdörffer and Öztunali and bringing on Jatta and Dompe on the wings. Former KSC man Stephan Ambrosius also came on for centre-back Guilherme Ramos, who had already picked up a yellow card. László Bénes, who netted a brace against Schalke last weekend, was then able to score a spectacular equaliser. After HSV were awarded a free kick following a foul from Gondorf on Immanuel Pherai, the Slovakian stepped up and placed his free kick into the top right corner from 22 metres out (61’). Just five minutes later, Bénes was once again involved after his long-range effort turned into the perfect assist for Glatzel, who redirected it past goalkeeper Patrick Drewes to put the Rothosen ahead.
After going 2-1 down, KSC once again started to play more expansively and first came close to an equaliser as Heyer saw two shots saved by Heuer Fernandes, denying KSC a leveller with 15 mins left to play. The HSV shotstopper was able to tip an effort from Wanitzek from 20 metres behind for a corner with a sublime save. Subsequently, HSV sat deep and attempted to concentrate on defending against KSC’s frenzied attacks. At the same time, HSV still posed a threat on the counter. The substitute Dompe was involved in both of Hamburg’s best attacks in the closing stages, although he could not take these chances. In the first minute of the second half he placed his shot from 15 metres straight into Drewes’ arms, whilst he later glided past his opponent, but once again couldn’t beat the 'keeper. Bakery Jatta then put the follow-up over the bar just after having been introduced. It was then KSC who were able to secure a draw with the last action of the game. Substitute Budu Zivzivadze received a precise pass from Stindl and placed the ball in the left-hand corner of the goal with an accurate finish.
KSC were therefore able to take a point off the Rothosen, with the match ending a deserved, if unfortunate, 2-2 draw. HSV currently have four points to their name after last weekend’s victory at home against Schalke, but will rue having missed out on the full three points today. Tim Walter’s side travel to take on Rot-Weiß Essen in the first round of the DFB-Pokal next Sunday (13th August). Their next league fixture will see them take on another recently relegated Bundesliga side when Hertha BSC visit the Volkspark on 19th August.
