HSV draw 1-1 with Hertha BSC
Königsdörffer gave the Rothosen an early lead at a sold-out Volksparkstadion (11’), but Kenny equalised four minutes from time (86’).
On Saturday, 10th August, HSV drew 1-1 with Hertha BSC in front of 57,000 spectators at a sold-out Volksparkstadion. This was their first home game for 83 days. On Matchday Two, Ransford Königsdörffer gave his side an early lead with his third goal of the season, and the Rothosen failed to take advantage of several opportunities to add another before the break. After half time, Hertha posed more of a threat, but HSV managed to stand firm until Jonjoe Kenny equalised for the Old Lady with four minutes to go (86’).
Königsdörffer quick off the mark again…
For the first home match of the 2024/25 season, HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart picked the same eleven who won 2-1 at Köln in the opening game. New signing Silvan Hefti was named on the bench six days after joining the club. Both sides stood strong in a hard-fought first few minutes and restricted each other to only a few efforts which were blocked. HSV though took the lead with the first big chance of the game in the eleventh minute. Bakery Jatta beat former Rothosen midfielder Jeremy Dudziak on the right before crossing into the centre, where Königsdörffer was arriving on the edge of the six-yard box. Last week’s two-goal hero headed past Tjark Ernst, who got a hand to it but was beaten by the power. The Berlin-born man gave HSV an early lead, just as he had done in the previous match in Cologne.
The Rothosen began to control the game more and more after the goal, and created a host of good chances. In the 18th minute, centre-back Sebastian Schonlau tried his luck from around 25 yards out, but his powerful effort was deflected wide off the head of former Germany international Diego Demme. Eight minutes later, Ludovit Reis had an opportunity to put his side 2-0 up. After being played in well by Miro Muheim, he let fly from around eleven yards out, but his low effort was saved by Ernst. HSV continued to pile the pressure on Hertha’s goal, with new signing Adam Karabec posing a particular danger, but the Rothosen failed to find the net from two of his crosses (36’, 39’) or his blocked effort (37’). Just before half time, the Czech curled one narrowly wide of the top left-hand corner, and HSV were unable to add to their lead before the break.
…before Hertha strike back late
The first chance of the second period again fell to the Rothosen, when Daniel Elfadli stormed into the penalty area before playing it to Muheim on the left, and the latter fired just wide from a tight angle (50’). Hertha then began to pile on the pressure themselves. Daniel Heuer Fernandes was firstly called into action by a long-range shot from Haris Tabakovic (53’), before the Bosnian was inches away from getting on the end of a ball into the centre (56’). The visitors’ best chance of the game so far fell to Linus Gechter around the hour mark. The centre-back struck the post from around six yards out following a corner. In the 67th minute, Silvan Hefti came on for his debut for the Rothosen, while Immanuel Pherai and, four minutes later, former Hertha man Davie Selke were also introduced. The game then settled down somewhat, and HSV continued to defend with determination.
Substitute Luca Schuler had the visitors’ next opportunity in the 81st minute, but his volleyed effort on the turn from around 14 yards out was saved by Heuer Fernandes. At the other end, it was HSV’s turn to strike the woodwork, when Immanuel Pherai curled a sumptuous free kick over the wall and was millimetres from hitting the back of the net. This came back to haunt the Rothosen four minutes from time, when Hertha’s Jonjoe Kenny took advantage of uncertainty in the HSV penalty area to strike into the bottom corner at the second attempt. Driven on by their enthusiastic home support, the Rothosen then went in search of a winning goal, but were unable to benefit from a succession of corners in injury time. The game therefore ended level.
