HSV come away with a point after 3-3 draw in Kaiserslautern
HSV came back to pick up a point following an emotional rollercoaster of a game on Sunday evening against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Robert Glatzel scored a brace for the Rothosen, with Miro Muheim scoring the equaliser to make it 3-3.
Hamburger SV drew 3-3 on Sunday evening (28th October) on Matchday 11 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. HSV took an early lead through Glatzel in front of a sell-out crowd at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion (10’). Following lots of mistakes in build-up play and defence, they suddenly found themselves 3-1 down after goals for FCK from Tomiak, Ritter and Boyd (13’, 24’, 49’). HSV didn’t give up, however, and following another goal from Glatzel (65’) and then Muheim, HSV pulled the game back to pick up a 3-3 draw, which based on exciting attacking but defensively fragile performances from both sides was a fair result overall.
Jatta to Glatzel - early 1-0 lead
HSV head coach Tim Walter wasn’t only missing captain Schonlau with a long-term injury, but also had to do without Van der Brempt and Dompe, as well as vice-captain Reis, who recently suffered a shoulder injury. Pherai came into the starting eleven is his place and was involved from the outset at Fritz-Walter-Stadion. It was his pass which set Jatta away down the right, who then played the ball into the middle for Glatzel, with the forward rolling the ball home from close range and giving HSV a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
A deserved lead from Tim Walter’s side, who had been alert right from kick off, were committed in the challenge and posed an attacking threat. This made it even more surprising that the hosts found an immediate equaliser, with Tomiak volleying home with help from the inside of the post following a corner (13’). The Rothosen didn’t allow this to phase them, maintained possession of the ball and with a bit more luck could’ve gone 2-1 up, with Meffert’s header from a corner hitting the crossbar (20’). As it was, FCK took the lead, with HSV centre-back Hadzikadunic slipping on the rain-soaked grass at the crucial moment, allowing Tachie to cross for Ritter who tapped home from close range (24’). It was a very clinical performance from the hosts, with three shots on target leading to two goals. They were unable to increase their lead before the break, though, but Hamburg’s lively attacking play also didn’t lead to any further clear-cut chances at the end of the half. This meant that the hosts went into the break 2-1 ahead.
From 3-1 down to back level at 3-3
HSV pressed for an equaliser right at the start of the second half, with Glatzel backheeling towards goal, but Elvedi blocked the ball just before the line for the hosts. FCK then found joy on the attack themselves, with Boyd sent through in the 54th minute following a HSV giveaway, the attacker started in his own half before turning Hadzikadunic inside and out and then firing past Heuer Fernandes to make it 3-1.
But giving up was never an option for HSV and Tim Walter made an attacking change after an hour bringing on a striker in the shape of Nemeth to replace a defender in Heyer – and setting up a crazy last half an hour in the process. This all-or-nothing attacking approach opened up some space for the hosts on the counter, but it also allowed HSV to work their way back into the game. Once again it was Glatzel who scored for the away side, with Meffert sliding the ball through to him perfectly in the 65th minute, and the HSV striker perfectly lifting the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper and into the back of the net. The Rothosen kept the pressure on and worked extremely hard, before then receiving the slice of luck they needed. FCK ‘keeper Krahl misjudged a flighted ball into the box from Muheim, which sailed over him into the far corner, meaning the scoreline now read 3-3. Unbelievable, but HSV didn’t stop there and continued to search for a fourth goal and the win. They were fortunate a couple of times, with FCK breaking on the counter, first through Opoku who hit the post and then through Zimmer who had his effort cleared off the line by Ramos (88’, 90’). At the end of an unbelievably exciting game in front of an electric atmosphere produced by a crowd of almost 50,000 supporters, the result was a draw, which was a fair result on the balance of play.
