HSV beaten 2-0 by SC Paderborn
The Rothosen suffered defeat at the hands of SC Paderborn on Matchday 24 of the 2. Bundesliga. Filip Bilbija (15’) and Adriano Grimaldi (84’) were the goalscorers for the home side.
Hamburger SV were beaten 2-0 away at SC Paderborn on Sunday, 2nd March. Despite making a strong start to the game in front of 15,000 spectators at a sold-out Home Deluxe Arena, the Rothosen fell behind to a goal from Bilbija. Hamburg then failed to take their chances in either the first or the second half, and Grimaldi made it 2-0 in the 84th minute to bring HSV’s 11-match unbeaten run to an end.

SCP with the opener …
Head coach Polzin, who was back on the touchline after illness, made one change to his side after the 3-0 home win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern last time out. After returning from suspension, Sahiti came in for Mebude on the right flank as Hamburg lined up in their usual 4-3-3 formation. They looked to control the game in the early stages and had 65 percent of the possession in the first half. It was the hosts who had the first dangerous attack, however. After a successful breakaway, Zehnter fired a low shot narrowly wide of the post (11’). Bilbija made no mistake a few minutes later though. Ansah put in a cross with the outside of the boot, which was flicked on by the head of Terho, and Bilbija was there to nod home from close range (15’).
HSV were woken up by this goal and started to threaten in the final third. They recorded three big opportunities inside a minute. Riemann had to save a Karabec corner with his foot, before Selke put the follow-up over the bar, and then fired into the side netting soon afterwards (20’). HSV and their top scorer kept on trying though. A few minutes later, the 30-year-old tested the SCP goalkeeper with a header (22’), and then, in the 34th minute, Dompe’s cross led to another battle between the experienced striker and goalkeeper. Riemann got there once again, allowing Zehnter to clear off the line. The mask-wearing striker was at the centre of proceedings once again, but on this occasion mistimed his header after a cross from the right (41’). Paderborn, who were now largely being pinned back into their own half, did create two more half chances before the break, but didn’t take either of them, and it remained 1-0 at half time.

… and HSV without that bit of luck
HSV looked to pick up where they had left off after the restart. Sahiti powerfully shot towards the near post after being played in by Reis, but he was also denied by Riemann (48’). At the other end, his opposite number Heuer Fernandes had to make his first decisive intervention as he turned Zehnter’s low shot onto the far post (54’). This was a warning sign for the Rothosen, who were now trying to find the right balance in their play. There was another scare around 15 minutes later, when Paderborn were awarded a penalty, only for it to be overturned by VAR because of an offside in the build-up (70’).
Both head coaches looked to influence the game with substitutions in an already very tactical encounter. While HSV boss Polzin brought on fresh legs in attack in the shape of Balde, Königsdörffer and Richter, his SCP counterpart Kwasniok chose to call on experience and defensive ability. Straight after these changes, Dompe looked to find the top corner from a tight angle, but the ball just wouldn’t go in for HSV (77’). This bad luck summed up the game, and substitute Grimaldi turned in an Ansah cross to make it 2-0 and wrap up the win for the home side (84’). Both teams had one more chance before the end through headers from Grimaldi and Selke. The final whistle blew soon after, and HSV suffered their first defeat after 11 matches unbeaten, as well as their first loss under Polzin.
