HSV beaten 1-0 by Hannover 96
The Rothosen suffered their first defeat of the season as they were beaten away at Hannover 96. Jessic Ngankam netted the only goal of the day from the penalty spot, while HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau was sent off for a second yellow card late on.
On Friday, 23rd August, Hamburger SV were beaten 1-0 by Hannover 96 in their 2. Bundesliga Matchday 3 clash. In front of 49,000 spectators at a sold-out Heinz von Heiden Arena, the two teams played out a mostly cagey tactical battle in the first half, in which neither side created many chances of note. Just after half time, the game opened up when the hosts took the lead through a Jessic Ngankam penalty. The Rothosen piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser and created a host of opportunities, but couldn’t quite find the goal that their efforts deserved. Captain Sebastian Schonlau was also shown the red card after receiving a second yellow in injury time.
Defensively solid in the first half …
Head coach Steffen Baumgart made two changes to his side from the 7-1 win over SV Meppen in their DFB-Pokal first round match. Bakery Jatta, who has suffered an ankle injury, was replaced by Davie Selke, who started as the loan striker in what was a 4-3-3 formation with the ball. Dennis Hadzikadunic also came in for Fabio Balde at the centre of defence. His opposite number, Stefan Leitl, also made several changes and deviated from his usual 3-4-2-1 formation. This led to a tactical start to the game which was largely contested in the centre of the pitch. It was therefore not a surprise that a set piece provided the first big chance of the match after more than 20 minutes. Miro Muheim had a go from a free kick in a promising position, but was denied by Hannover captain Ron-Robert Zieler. HSV also created the game’s first chance from open play, when Immanuel Pherai fired just wide with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area (23’).
Baumgart’s side set up with a back five off the ball, and looked very solid defensively, facing just one nervy moment in the first period. In the 35th minute, Jannik Rochelt picked up a long ball from Phil Neumann, beat Hadzikadunic, and finished past Daniel Heuer Fernandes to seemingly put his side ahead. The goal was however correctly disallowed after it was adjudged that Hannover’s new signing had handled in the build-up. The two teams then went in goalless at the break after a hard-fought first half.
… and on the attack in the second
After such a defensively sound first half, it was a bitter blow for the Rothosen when they fell behind just a few minutes into the second. Jessic Ngankam got on the end of a long ball in behind the HSV defence and went down after contact with Schonlau inside the penalty area. Referee Patrick Alt pointed to the spot, and Ngankam picked himself up to slot the kick into the bottom left-hand corner (49’). HSV therefore fell behind in a game for the first time this season. They were then twice inches away from a leveller. Firstly, Selke headed just wide from a Muheim corner (55’), before Adam Karabec missed by a whisker from the edge of the box (63’).
The goal changed the make-up of the game, and both teams upped the tempo and attacked with purpose. Steffen Baumgart made two changes in the 70th minute in an effort to keep his side on the front foot. Robert Glatzel and Lukasz Poreba replaced Selke and Ludovit Reis. These two substitutes combined shortly after to create another big chance, when the Pole volleyed wide after last year’s top scorer had headed the ball into his path (78’). Schonlau then couldn’t quite find the target with a header (82’). HSV would have richly deserved the equaliser after creating a multitude of chances, but were unable to hit the back of the net. Their misery was compounded when captain Schonlau received his marching orders in injury time after a tactical foul. It turned out to be a difficult evening for the Rothosen, who suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
