HSV and FC Augsburg draw 2-2 in pre-season friendly
An entertaining game in Heimstetten with four goals in the space of seven minutes including two impressive strikes from Manuel Wintzheimer.
Hamburger SV bid farewell to the training camp in Grassau on Wednesday morning and headed to Heimstetten for a friendly against FC Augsburg, which they drew 2-2. Manuel Wintzheimer equalised twice (23‘ and 26‘) after Augsburg goals from Kevin Danso (19’) and Andre Hahn (24’). Aside from the coronavirus-related absences (Robert Glatzel and Amadou Onana) and Stephan Ambrosius (long-term injury), the Rothosen were also without Sonny Kittel, Jeremy Dudziak, Daniel Heuer Fernandes, David Kinsombi, Miro Muheim and Josha Vagnoman. HSV took control of the game early on and enjoyed the majority of possession and the first two chances (Schonlau and Jatta).
Soon after, FC Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl’s side started what turned out to be a wild seven minutes on the SV Heimstetten pitch. Centre-back Kevin Danso, who had come up for a free-kick and hung around in the penalty area, steered a long-range effort from Marco Richter into the back of the net for the opening goal (19’). Four minutes later, Manuel Wintzheimer danced past two defenders and let fly from 25 yards, beating Daniel Gikiewicz with an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Augsburg responded immediately through former HSV man Andre Hahn, who finished off a long ball from his goalkeeper to put his side back in front. Once again, Manuel Wintzheimer came up with the goods, this time just two minutes later. Jonas David won the ball back on the halfway line and played the 22-year-old through on goal. Wintzheimer did not mess about and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper from 20 yards or so to make it 2-2. The game’s pace dropped off somewhat after this flurry of goals and the score remained 2-2 at the break.
Walter made six changes to the eleven at half time. Among others, youngster Leo Oppermann got his first stint between the sticks for the HSV first team. Just two minutes after the restart, Oppermann was almost beaten as Uduokhai headed onto the crossbar before Danso nodded the rebound over. Some 20 minutes went by before either side caused any danger going forward. Robin Meißner’s shot zipped past the Augsburg goal in the 67th minute before Moritz Heyer blocked a shot from Maurice Malone three minutes later. The recent 15 training sessions were visibly taking their tole on the Rothosen as the game went into the closing stages – the game opened up a little and Augsburg began to counterattack. The HSV back line managed to deal with the danger each time. A goalless second half left Tim Walter and his team with a 2-2 draw to reflect on as they head back to Hamburg to resume training on Saturday, ahead of the next friendly on Monday (12 July) against Silkeborg IF.
