Despite Glatzel's brace: Friendly match defeat against SC Freiburg
HSV lost its first test match of the Spain training camp against Bundesliga team SC Freiburg 2:6 after playing 140 minutes. Robert Glatzel scored the two Hamburg goals.
On Friday (13 January), Hamburger SV played its first test match of the training camp. Against SC Freiburg, who just like the Hamburg team have pitched their training camp tents in the hotel "S/O" in Sotogrande, southern Spain, the Red Shorts completed a real XXL test, which was played in three thirds over a total of 140 minutes. In the end, HSV lost 2:6 to the second-placed team in the Bundesliga, with a Glatzel double scoring the goals.
Double brace: Jatta sets up, Glatzel scores
HSV coach Tim Walter sent in his top team for the start - just like the Freiburg team, who fielded all their regular players such as World Cup players Ginter, Günter, Doan and Kyereh or top scorer Grifo. And they got off to the best possible start, as Glatzel headed home a perfect Jatta cross for a 1-0 lead as early as the fourth minute. However, this lead lasted only three minutes, because Grifo then scored a questionable handball penalty to make it 1-1 (7th) and thus initiated Freiburg's best phase. Gulde took advantage of a corner kick (10th) and Kyereh (12th, 14th) after a Hamburg inconsistency as well as a lightning-clean counter-attack to score further goals, so that the Bundesliga top team, which will start again in the Bundesliga in a week's time, was suddenly leading 4:1 after about a quarter of an hour. HSV, who had just started their preparation, reacted immediately, stopped the open exchange of blows and concentrated on bringing more stability back into their own game. This was successful, because the Rothosen didn't let anything happen again and were able to get back on the offensive. The deserved reward came after about half an hour when top scorer Glatzel scored again from the edge of the penalty area after another pass from Jatta to make it 2:4 and thus the final score of the first period.
Heuer Fernandes saves a penalty kick
After the first half, both teams continued to play unchanged and continued to produce good offensive actions, although SC Freiburg came closest to scoring goal number seven of the match when they were awarded a penalty kick after one hour, which was debatable from Hamburg's point of view, but Gregoritsch failed to save it from the strongly reacting Heuer Fernandes. For HSV, this was like an additional energy boost, because from then on the Reds acted extremely gripping, defended very compactly already in midfield and, especially through the more and more revving up Dompé, repeatedly came to dangerous actions in front of the opponent's goal. However, the goal for 3:4 was not scored, instead Freiburg scored 2:5 (86th) through the substitute Jeong, also a World Cup participant, shortly before the end of the second period.
A crossbar instead of a third HSV goal
The last period began with a huge change of personnel, especially Tim Walter now gave his many young junior players playing time. Seven players from the Regional League team as well as the U19 of the Red Shirts faced a likewise rejuvenated, but still well-known Freiburg selection around the veterans Petersen, Schmid and Höler. Loudly coached by Tim Walter, the team put up a good fight, even though Petersen scored the 2:6 after the third penalty kick of the game (107th), which was again critically eyed by HSV. Nevertheless, the young Rothosen stayed in the game, defended well, had a strong back-up in Raab in goal and also had chances for the third Hamburg goal through Amaechi and Königsdörffer and especially through Sanne's crossbar. Although the third goal was not scored, veteran Kittel summed it up after this XXL test: "You could see that SC Freiburg, as a top Bundesliga team, has a lot of quality and, due to time constraints, is much further along in their preparation than we are. But we showed that we can definitely keep up, so it was a very good test for us."
