“Deliver good performances over the course of a full 90 minutes”
HSV drew 1-1 with Hertha BSC in their first home game of the new season. We have the reaction after what was a game of two halves.
Daniel Elfadli: It was so disappointing to concede in the 86th minute. We should have defended that better. We were too hectic and were missing a bit of patience and composure on the ball in many phases of the game. We weren’t able to make the opponent work and keep hold of the ball. This meant that we were pinned back and that led to the equalising goal. We know we’ve got the ability to beat anyone. We showed that again today, but we have to perform over the full 90 minutes. 45 or 60 minutes just isn’t enough.
“Our job now is to deliver these good performances over the course of a full 90 minutes.” Sebastian Schonlau
Sebastian Schonlau: Of course it hurts when you concede in the 86th minute, especially when Manu’s free kick nearly put us 2-0 up just before that. At the end of the day though, we’ve got a point which takes us to four from two games. We were all over Hertha in the first half, created a multitude of chances and should have scored another goal. We had too little of the ball in the second though. We can be encouraged by the fact that we were dangerous going forward and quite solid defensively. Our job now is to deliver these good performances over the course of a full 90 minutes.
Silvan Hefti: It was always the plan for me to get some game time, but you can never be sure. I’d been preparing for this and I’m pleased I was able to come on. It was a great experience, even though the mood has now been dampened somewhat. The first half was very good, and we were quite dominant. In the second period, we sat back a bit too much and conceded a few chances. We shouldn’t have let in the equaliser, which is really disappointing. We have to work on defending the space better in those phases of the game.
Ransford Königsdörffer: We dominated the game in the first half, both on the ball and defensively. We were a bit more passive in the second, and maybe concentrated too much on holding on to that one-goal advantage. We’ve learnt a lesson from this and we need to do better next time. It’s disappointing that we couldn’t get over the line today, but four points is okay, even if we’d obviously rather have had six. I’m pleased with the faith the gaffer has put in me and want to pay it back with my performances. It’s great that I’m developing as a player through gaining more experience.
Jonas Meffert: We wanted to stay on top in the second half, but unfortunately we couldn’t do that. We should have played with more courage. We were generally well-organised defensively until the equaliser. Our performance was pretty good, particularly in the first half. After taking the lead, we sat back a bit more and tried to hit them on the counter. It was disappointing to concede that goal, because if we hadn’t, the team would have gone home thinking we’d executed the game plan perfectly. We simply had to score that second goal in the first half.
“We had a nice balance of both keeping the ball and staying strong defensively.” Daniel Heuer Fernandes
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: The first half was good. We had a nice balance of both keeping the ball and staying strong defensively. We were too passive in the second half though. Hertha piled on the pressure, played a lot of crosses into the middle, and managed to score after pinball in the box. That’s really disappointing for us. We should have controlled the game better as a team in order to get over the line. Hertha did have more possession, but didn’t create a lot of big chances. We weren’t clinical enough in the decisive moments to wrap the game up though.
Steffen Baumgart: In my opinion, this was a fair result based on the full 90 minutes. In the first half, we had control of the game from the ten-minute mark, and should have added to our lead, but we missed too many chances. This of course allowed the opponent to get back into the game. You could tell in the second half that Hertha had one or two things up their sleeve. I think we saw two excellent teams who both wanted to win the game. Hertha BSC were definitely the better side in the second half, so we’ll have to take the draw. We’ll look at what we could have done better in the second period though.
Cristian Fiel: This was a game of two halves. We started well and showed that we wanted to win the match. We need to get better at sniffing out the danger though. We should have stopped the cross from Jatta. When you give Ransi a free header like that after eleven minutes, you’re going to fall behind. HSV were then much more dominant in the first half. In the second though, there was one team who were on top and gave everything to try and turn the game around. That’s how I saw it. We richly deserved the point.
