“Davie, stick it away!” – reaction to the draw in Regensburg
Davie Selke’s penalty rescued the Rothosen a point in Regensburg despite HSV trailing for large parts of the game and having a man sent off. Here is the post-match reaction.
Davie Selke: We fought hard to get at least a point in the end despite having a man sent off. The lads deserve so much credit for sticking at it after I missed a penalty. They then won us a second one, which I was able to score. Despite that, we can’t be happy with our performance, we expected more of ourselves. We were at least able to build up a lot more pressure in the second half, which allowed us to create chances and win the two penalties. I work hard on taking penalties in training, but goalkeepers will sometimes save them. The support the lads gave me for the second one was really nice. Jean-Luc gave me the ball and just said: “Davie, stick it away.” We gave our all, showed real character and got the equaliser with one less player on the pitch.
Jonas Meffert: We kept on believing after the red card, won another penalty and Davie scored it. Not losing today was really important for our ongoing run. We obviously always want to win every game, regardless of who we’re playing against. We’d have preferred to get all three points today, but we didn’t start well and had to show real character with 10 men to keep up our unbeaten run. One point is better than none, so we’ve got mixed feelings overall.
"We stuck together as a team, reacted well to the events of the game, fought hard" Merlin Polzin
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We dealt well with several setbacks – the missed penalty and the red card – in today’s game. It certainly wasn’t our best performance in terms of the football we played, but we fought hard and earned ourselves a point in the end. We perhaps lacked a cutting edge at times and weren’t at our best, though we tried everything we could. We’ll keep staying true to ourselves and we’re looking forward to the coming weeks now.
Merlin Polzin: We were prepared for what awaited us today: a high-intensity game, a real battle and a scrappy affair. It was the game we expected, but we had hoped for a better performance of our own. We are not satisfied with how we played. After a strong start, there were a few things about our play which we didn’t like. We weren’t as incisive as we wanted to be. However, we stuck together as a team, reacted well to the events of the game, fought hard and got a point in the end. When a game doesn’t go to plan like this one today, you have to at least make sure you don’t lose it.
Andreas Patz: Much of the game went the way we had hoped it would. We aimed to be unpleasant to face by being first into the tackle in order to stop HSV from playing the way they want. We simply needed to set ourselves up better to prevent both the penalty situations from coming about. If we had done that then we would be walking away with the win today. Nevertheless, against a tough opponent like HSV, we are pleased with the point.
