Comeback in vain as HSV lose 4-3 to Karlsruhe
The Rothosen managed to recover from 2-0 and 3-2 down against KSC in the first home game of the new year, but were unable to hold on for an important point in the battle for promotion.
Hamburger SV’s first home fixture of 2024 ended with a 4-3 defeat to Karlsruher SC on Sunday afternoon. 51,776 fans at the almost packed-out Volksparkstadion witnessed the worst possible start, as Tim Walter’s side found themselves 2-0 down inside just five minutes. The Rothosen managed to fight back to 2-2 at half time with a quickfire double of their own, but the visitors restored their lead less than a minute after the restart. HSV again found an equaliser around the hour mark, but KSC struck for a fourth time in the closing stages to hand Hamburg their second home defeat of the season.
A pair of quickfire doubles
Head coach Tim Walter made two changes to his side compared to last weekend. Muheim returned from suspension and took over from Heyer at left-back, while Reis was given the nod in midfield in place of Pherai. After a successful start to the second half of the season with the 2-0 win at Schalke, the Rothosen were hoping to carry on in the same vein for the visit of 11th-placed Karlsruhe, however, any momentum was left shattered into pieces after only five minutes.
The visitors sliced through HSV twice in a very similar situations, with right-back Jung able to get beyond the backline in both the third and fifth minute and set up a brace of goals for Matanovic. The hosts struggled to find a response to the early setback, and things almost went from bad to worse with chances from Zivzivadze and Kobald. It took around quarter of an hour before Hamburg were able to get a foothold; Glatzel registered the team’s first shot and then they started to take control of proceedings. Their reward followed in the 33rd minute. Jatta timed his run perfectly to latch onto Benes’ through-ball and he finished past Drewes to make it 2-1. HSV pressed on and delivered a double blow of their own, levelling the scores two minutes later thanks to a powerful left-footed finish from Benes after good work down the flank from Dompa. The turnaround was almost completed in the 38th minute, but Glatzel missed the target by inches with only the KSC goalkeeper to beat. Drewes also made saves from Dompe’s free-kick and another effort from Glatzel to ensure the sides were level at 2-2 after a rollercoaster first half.
Second home defeat
The second 45 began in the same fashion as the first – with HSV frustration following an early goal for Karlsruhe, this time in the very first minute of action. Zivzivadze got the better of HSV’s centre-backs from the first high ball forwards and poked the ball beyond goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes to make it 3-2. Once again, the Rothosen didn’t let their heads drop and looked to get back into the game, eventually finding a response just after the hour mark. Meffert won the ball back in midfield and played in Jatta, whose incisive dribbling and clever lay-off in the box allowed Glatzel to easily slot home and make it 3-3.
HSV pressed for a fourth goal and continued to attack, whereas KSC looked to hold on to possession in order to deal with HSV’s pressure and to gain control of the game. Nevertheless, neither approach produced further notable chances – that is until the Rothosen made a crucial mistake in the 81st minute. Wanitzek pressed high and won the ball off Van der Brempt following Reis’ under-hit pass, before leaving Heuer Fernandes with no chance as he fired his shot into the far corner. HSV once again didn’t throw in the towel and tried to drag themselves level for the third time in the remaining nine minutes plus stoppages. Nemeth and Pherai came on in the last few minutes in order to aid HSV’s final attacking push. However, HSV had somewhat run out of energy at this stage and were now unable to find the penetration required to find a leveller. Instead, Heuer Fernandes was even called into action once more in additional time as he found himself one-on-one with the onrushing Brosinski. Hamburg’s number one won that duel, but he was unable to prevent his side from falling to a second home defeat of the season at the end of this crazy game of football.
