“A mature and confident performance – we deserved to win”
Hamburg recorded their biggest victory of the season with a 4-0 defeat of Eintracht Braunschweig and in doing so sent out a strong signal in the promotion race. The side were in high spirits after the game – here is their reaction to the win.
Sebastian Schonlau: Braunschweig’s style of play caused us some slight problems in the first few minutes. We made some tweaks after that and scored our goals at crucial times in the game. We wanted to show a reaction after last week and get a win at all costs. You could tell that in training over the last few days. We were focused throughout, especially out of possession, and we let Braunschweig know right from the start that we weren’t going to let them have things their own way. I’m very happy with how we’ve responded to last weekend’s setback. There’s nothing better than going into the derby with a win like that under our belt. Everyone at the club is fired-up and pushing us forward. Their support means every one of us is ready to give it everything for our colours and our club.
Immanuel Pherai: We put in a very mature and confident performance and we deserved to win. The course of the game certainly went our way today. It’s a bit fortunate that Braunschweig’s goal to make it 2-1 was ruled out – otherwise things might have gone differently. We want to win every game. Obviously the last few weeks haven’t gone the way we would have wanted, but we can’t give up. Today we finally had a performance and result we can be satisfied with.
"We were ice-cold in front of gold, that was what stood out today" Matheo Raab
Matheo Raab: It was important to get a clear victory. We defended well and compared to the last few weeks we were decisive going forward as well. We were ice-cold in front of goal – that was what stood out for us today. We can head into the next few weeks with confidence. I thought I had the ball in my hands for their disallowed goal to make it 2-1, and then two players clattered into me – the referee did a good job of reviewing the incident on the screen.
Jonas Meffert: We’re happy to have won, even if the frustration from our defeat last time out still lingers. Lady Luck was on our side today. We’ve been lacking a bit in that department in the last few weeks. It’s a good feeling to win so emphatically. The midfielders did very well when we didn’t have the ball today. The song the fans sang at the end of the game was a fitting one. We’re now looking forward to Friday and the derby.
"We played well and showed good confidence" Steffen Baumgart
Steffen Baumgart: When I look at the game as a whole, I’m very satisfied. After a challenging opening to the game, in which Braunschweig had a few dangerous moments and we had to tread carefully, we did very well after the break and scored two clinical goals. With respect to Braunschweig’s disallowed goal, I felt that Matheo Raab got his hand to the ball first, so it’s a foul and it was the correct decision to rule the goal out. After that, we played well and showed good confidence, which is a positive sign. We now have to put in a similar performance against St. Pauli next week if we want to win the game. And make no mistake, that’s our aim.
Daniel Scherning: HSV's victory is well-deserved, even in terms of the scoreline. We failed to do the things that have contributed to our recent good performances. We were okay in the early stages; we were getting set-pieces and created a couple of chances. When we conceded the first two goals, we didn't put any pressure on the ball, particularly when it was out wide. Then came the unfortunate situation with the disallowed goal, and we kept plugging away after that, but HSV were in control of possession and scored two more goals. We haven't lost a game by such a large margin since I've been coach here, so we need to pick ourselves up and get back on track.
