“A great team performance!”
HSV’s 3-1 win against Magdeburg saw them impress on the ball in the first half, before needing to dig deep after going down to 10 men. Read on for all the post-match reaction to the game.
Miro Muheim: Hats off to the entire team. The first half was really strong. We did everything that the coaches wanted us to, and we took a deserved 3-0 lead into the break. The red card after the break was obviously a bit unfortunate, but we fought hard and were able to defend everything that came our way. We barely allowed them any chances, even with the man advantage. My compliments to the entire team.
Sebastian Schonlau: We played well for the majority of the match. We took a 3-0 lead into the break and then nearly netted a fourth right after the restart. The red card came out of nowhere and I was the reason why we started to struggle — that has to be said. But, the lads did a great job and I’m really happy about that. Bobby’s message really affected all of us and we wanted to get it done for him today. We have a lot of players in the team that can fill in.
On the foul: Looking back on it now, I should have just let him run. In the moment, however, I let my reflexes take over. That ended up making it worse.
On his muted celebrations after the final whistle: To put myself front and centre today would have been the wrong move. I’m very grateful to the lads for how we performed today. After the red card, you could see how much they wanted to win the game. They did exactly that, which is why they deserved to enjoy the applause.
"We’re giving our all in every game for Bobby as well." - Davie Selke
Davie Selke: Our performance in the first half was fantastic. Our coaches did a great job of preparing us. The important thing was that we remained solid in defence during the second half against Magdeburg. That’s what you need, in order to keep pace at the top.
On Robert Glatzel: Bobby is an important player for us, both on and off the pitch. Celebrating with his shirt was meant to show that we’re thinking of him and that we’re happy that everything went well with his operation. We’re giving our all in every game for him as well.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: A strong performance from us, especially with the ball in the first half. Magdeburg were putting us under pressure early on and we tried to find ways of getting behind them. That worked out well and we were then able to find good solutions up front thanks to our physicality and pace, with each of our goals being well-worked ones. The red card obviously changed the game, but we were up for it. The way that we all fought and defended our box during that period was symbolic of a great team performance.
Noah Katterbach: My right foot is pretty good, which is why I wasn’t surprised by my goal. I also tended to play higher up the pitch during my academy days, which is why I feel pretty comfortable in situations like that. It was nice that it worked out like that. After the goal, my first thought was of that famous celebration from the last Olympics, because a lot of other athletes have done it since then. I don’t really understand why people are now misinterpreting it as being something else.
Steffen Baumgart, HSV head coach: The first half was excellent, as we kept them to a handful of chances while being clinical up front and we were even a bit unlucky that Marco Richter only hit the post. The red card completely changed the game. During that period, it was crucial that we remain solid in defence, not allow our opponents any shots and that we threw everything into defence. The first half saw us deliver a strong performance on the ball, while the second half was all about our fighting spirit — that’s exactly what I want to see and it shows that we’re on the right path.
Christian Titz, Magdeburg head coach: What happened was exactly what we expected: HSV were dangerous from set pieces and looked to play long balls over the top. We weren’t able to prevent that from happening on two or three occasions. We then weren’t able to take our chances often enough. After making it 3-1, we just weren’t good enough even with a man more in order to find our way back into the game.
