4-2 defeat in friendly against Twente
HSV suffered a 4-2 defeat in a friendly against Eredivisie side and Europa League participants FC Twente. Davie Selke scored both goals for the Rothosen.
Hamburger SV faced FC Twente in a spontaneously arranged friendly on Wednesday afternoon (13th November), falling to a 4-2 defeat after 90 minutes. HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart took the opportunity to give several players a chance at more minutes, including Silvan Hefti and Daniel Hadzikadunic. They were able to test themselves against a strong opponent, with Twente having qualified for this season's Europa League after finishing third in the Eredivisie last season. The side from Enschede also had the best attack in the division in 2023/24.
The first chance fell to HSV, as Levin Öztunali went close early on. The hosts were then able to take the lead in the 16th minute, as Davie Selke headed in a corner from Marco Richter. Noah Katterbach then had a good opportunity to double HSV's lead in the 39th minute, but instead it was Twente that would catch the Rothosen on the break to net an equaliser through Owen Panneflek. The Rothosen continued to push forward in search of another, and were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time after Bakery Jatta was fouled. Selke stepped up to take it, coolly converting his second of the match to restore HSV's lead.
Baumgart made seven changes at half time in order to allow as many players as possible the opportunity to feature. Several were from the club's academy, and they worked hard after being brought on. However, the Rothosen allowed their opponents far too many chances in the second half. Sem Steijn brought Twente level again in the 51st minute, ushering in the strongest phase of the match for the visitors. Substitute Michel Vlap then came on to score a brace, sealing a 4-2 win for the visitors. "It was a game of two very different halves," said HSV goalkeeper Matheo Raab afterwards. "We were strong in the first half and rewarded ourselves by scoring. In the second half, we lost our rhythm a bit because of the many changes, which is normal in a friendly, and allowed them too many chances as a result. In the end, it was a good test for us and we will be able to analyse it and draw several conclusions from it."
