2:2 - HSV draw with Paderborn
Hamburg took the lead twice against SC Paderborn, but conceded the equaliser both times and ultimately had to settle for a draw in this dramatic duel.
Hamburger SV drew 2-2 (1:1) with SC Paderborn on Friday evening (5 May). In front of 57,000 spectators in the sold-out Volksparkstadion, Hamburg took the lead through Glatzel (39th) after a superior opening phase by SCP, before SCP hit back directly and equalised through Justvan (43rd). After the break, the Rothosen were initially the better team and scored through Kittel to make it 2-1 (49th), but a penalty kick in the 73rd minute by Muslija meant the 2:2 equaliser for the pursuing team, who, like HSV, played to win in the final phase. But another goal was not scored on this turbulent evening of football, despite all the sacrificial offensive efforts
HSV first in luck ...
For HSV, Meffert returned to the six-man position in place of Krahn after serving his yellow suspension and Benes replaced the suspended Jatta in midfield. Within the first five minutes, Heuer Fernandes had to save two good chances by Muslija and Justvan and also needed the help of Captain Schonlau, who saved Conteh's already beaten keeper with an outstanding save on the line. And on top of that, the post had to be used once, against which Rohr's header after Muslija's corner smacked. In other words: HSV was under a lot of pressure from the start and had to endure a lot before coach Walter's team could fight their way into the game. After about a quarter of an hour, the Rothosen had found their balance, gained a little more control of the game and now also found their way forward, so that Benes was able to fire the first shot on goal in the direction of the Paderborn box in the 26th minute and Reis was able to register Hamburg's first major chance after exactly half an hour. And that was just the vanguard, because in the 39th minute things really got going after Glatzel himself initiated the attack and then placed Dompe's cross inches wide of the right post. Hamburg's joy over the 1-0 goal lasted only a short time, however, because the Paderborn team was on the move with a broad chest after their strong performance and struck back immediately: Justvan circled the ball with a lot of feeling into the corner in the 43rd minute, giving Heuer Fernandes no chance and thus equalising 1-1. That was also the score going into the break, as Heyer's header to make it 2-1 was probably a touch too far in front and therefore offside.
... and later in bad luck
After the change of ends, the game continued as wild and turbulent as it had been right before the half-time whistle. And again a bit more alert: HSV. Especially Kittel, who simply snatched the ball from Müller in the penalty area, left keeper Huth out of the way and then calmly slid in the ball to make it 2:1 (49). And HSV kept going - and so did Kittel: solo across half the pitch, pass to Dompe, but Heyer's cross was unlucky to miss the empty goal. In short: Now it was time for a spectacle! SCP were also constantly playing forward and targeting the Hamburg box, so that the game went back and forth and the spectators, just like the players on the pitch, hardly had time to catch their breath. The first time this happened was after an hour, when Schonlau and Pieringer clashed so badly that the game was stopped for a few minutes to treat the lacerations of both players. And then, about ten minutes later, there was another stoppage in play, which the fans did not understand at first, before referee Braun suddenly put the ball on the penalty spot. Muheim had stepped on the foot of his opponent Muslija at the far edge of the penalty area, barely visible, and he safely converted the foul penalty a good quarter of an hour before the end to equalise 2:2. What an unfortunate and, above all, unnecessary goal that gave HSV a short time to recover, even though the Rothosen mobilised all their strength in the final minutes and tried everything. Just like the visitors, who also threw everything forward once more, so that the spectators experienced an open exchange of blows in the seven minutes of injury time. Of course, both teams desperately needed the win in order to challenge for the places in front of them, but in the end the two rivals in the battle for Bundesliga promotion parted with a 2-2 draw in the Hamburg rain.
