HSV fall to last-minute defeat against Osnabrück
A late penalty saw HSV lose 2-1 at home against Osnabrück despite a Robert Glatzel goal.
Hamburger SV lost 2-1 at home to VfL Osnabrück on Sunday afternoon (3rd March) in front of 57,000 fans at a packed Volksparkstadion. The visitors took an early lead through Kunze (6’), before Hamburg equalised on the stroke of half-time with a penalty from Robert Glatzel (45’). The Rothosen dominated proceedings for much of the second half, but gave away a penalty in the 89th minute which condemned them to defeat against the 2. Bundesliga’s bottom side.
An early deficit...
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart made only one change from the side which emerged victorious against Elversberg last time out, as Noah Katterbach came in at left-back to replace the ill Muheim. Katterbach’s return to the HSV starting XI quickly became something of a nightmare, as Kunze stole in behind a disorganised back line from a free-kick to give Osnabrück the lead. HSV responded with considerable intensity, but even as they pushed forward they had to be on guard against the threat of a counter-attack from the visitors, who pressed aggressively and played well. Referee Richard Hempel, who at 26 is the youngest man to take charge of a game at the Volksparkstadion, took a hard line to any and all transgressions, which greatly disrupted the flow of what was a hard-fought game with a number of closely-contested individual battles all over the park. Perhaps as a result of this, the next two flashpoints came from set-pieces – first, a Schonlau header from a corner narrowly missed the target, before Glatzel’s penalty shortly before the half-time whistle sent the Volksparkstadion into raptures and ensured the sides were level pegging as they returned to the dressing rooms. Glatzel’s spot-kick followed a foul on Pherai, who might well have scored himself had he not been knocked off his feet.
...and a late blow
HSV stepped things up in the second half and controlled more of the game, the majority of which was played in the Osnabrück half, though the Rothosen failed to create decent chances. Aside from a Königsdörffer header from close range that just went over the bar, the Osnabrück centre-backs Gyamfi and Diakhite were solid, as was their goalkeeper Kühn. However, with around a quarter of an hour left to play, this partnership was broken up as Gyamfi was shown a second yellow card, giving HSV a man advantage for the remainder of the game. Despite this bonus, the home team couldn’t find a second goal and instead conceded one themselves at the death. Van der Brempt fouled Tesche in the box and Cuisance stepped up to score from the spot. The visitors bravely defended their 2-1 lead in the five minutes added on, with Kühn saving Pherai’s effort from distance to seal all three points. It’s ultimately an extremely disappointing defeat for HSV, having been victorious in Baumgart’s first game in charge last week against Elversberg.
