1:2 - HSV loses to Darmstadt in dramatic duel
Three goals, four sending-offs and a seething Volksparkstadion: Friday evening's top match between HSV and Darmstadt 98 was highly emotional - with the better end for the visitors.
Hamburger SV lost its home match against SV Darmstadt 98 1:2 (0:2) on Friday evening (19 August). In front of 43,943 spectators, the visitors had taken an early lead with a double strike by Pfeiffer and Tietz (4th, 7th), before events came to a head in the second half. A yellow card for Darmstadt's Gjasula (58th), red cards for Hamburg's Opoku (62nd) and Königsdörffer (89th) as well as a sending-off for HSV's Boldt and a not fully crowned final offensive by the Rothosen after Königsdörffer's 1:2 goal in the 87th minute turned the Volkspark into a highly emotional madhouse, from which the Lilies finally took the three points.
Early goals conceded...
HSV coach Tim Walter fielded the same starting eleven against the Lilien as last weekend, when the Reds were convincing from start to finish and won 2-0 at Arminia Bielefeld. This time, however, the Walter team was given an ice-cold shower at the start. Although Hamburg's Kittel had the first shot on goal of the game, which just missed the target on the right, the team was soon twice as badly off.
Darmstadt did it with brains and scored a lightning-quick double through headers by Pfeiffer, who scored after a corner, and Titz, whose goal was awarded after a time-consuming VAR review. Thus, HSV was already behind 0:2 after seven minutes and had to shake hard at first. With the loud support of the fans, however, the team quickly fought its way back into the game and could have immediately tied the game with promising goals from Königsdörffer, Glatzel and Kittel, but each narrowly missed the 1:2. The result was an open exchange of blows against Darmstadt, who continued to be dangerous offensively as well as defending very flexibly, with many goalmouth scenes on both sides. Schuhen and Heuer Fernandes had anything but a quiet evening, but they held their own until the final whistle, so that Darmstadt's early 2:0 lead was still intact when referee Schröder blew the final whistle.
... and a dramatic end
After the change of ends, things got turbulent. On the one hand, because Walter substituted newcomer Dombé and the lively Frenchman caused a lot of commotion on the left wing, was involved in almost all of Hamburg's offensive actions and initiated some good finishes with his dribblings; and on the other hand, because the pace now became much fiercer - and after about an hour there were only ten players from each team on the pitch.
First, Gjasula was shown second yellow for repeated foul play, before Opoku, who had just been substituted, lost his nerve in a duel with Holland and was shown a straight red for a kick out- Football was still played, however, and the Rothosen had two great chances in the final phase of the game, which was now somewhat disjointed, through Glatzel, who was unable to score with either his head or his foot. In the final minutes, the Red Shorts had no choice but to use the crowbar - and Glatzel shone with it, setting up Königsdörffer for the well-deserved 1:2 in the 87th minute, which was to herald the start of the hot phase. But then referee Schröder saw another assault in a duel between Königsdörffer and Ronstadt, sent off the Hamburg goal scorer in the 89th minute and the protesting board member Boldt as well. The incredibly heated match came to an emotional end with the Rothosen empty-handed.
