1-0 – HSV beat Wacker Innsbruck in first friendly of pre-season
Jonas David scored the only goal of the game against the Austrian second division side. Ludovit Reis, Sebastian Schonlau and Jonas Meffert made their HSV debuts.
Hamburger SV were successful in their first outing of pre-season, defeating Austrian second division side Wacker Innsbruck on Wednesday afternoon (30th June). In the Upper Bavarian town of Grassau, where the Rothosen are currently based for their training camp (29/06-07/07), new head coach Tim Walter saw his side run out 1-0 winners after Jonas David's header in the 16th minute.
Walter had to make do without Robert Glatzel and Amadou Onana, who had both tested positive for Coronavirus, as well as Stephan Ambrosius (cruciate ligament) and new signing Miro Muheim, who suffered a thigh strain at the start of training on 18th June and is expected to return to full training in the coming days.
Strong start rewarded with goal…
Unlike a week ago, when the game VSG Altglienicke, which had been planned for Friday, had to be cancelled at short notice due to a high number of unavailabilities for HSV, head coach Tim Walter could rely on significantly more players on Wednesday against Innsbruck. At the home of ASV Grassau, Walter's typical attacking style was on display, with many position changes and high pressing. The Rothosen created the first big chance of the game after just two minutes, a cross deflected into the path of Sonny Kittel, who controlled with his chest before forcing Innsbruck keeper Lukas Wedl into his first save of the game with a volley. After FC Wacker also had their first chance through a long-range attempt by Okan Aydin, it was Jonas David who rewarded Hamburg's impressive start to the game. The 21-year-old was in the right place for a Kittel free kick and headed in from close range for a 1-0 lead (16'). Shortly after the goal, provider Kittel was forced off in the 28th minute, with Aaron Opoku coming on in his place. With the game calming down a little and no more real chances at either end, HSV went into the break with a one-goal lead.
… with no luck in the second half
Nine changes at the break saw only Tim Leibold and Opoku return for the second half. Unfortunately, the Rothosen were unable to build on the attacking momentum from before the break. While Anssi Suhonen (48'), Jeremy Dudziak (57') and new signing Ludovit Reis (84', 85') had opportunities to double the lead in the second half, all the chances went untaken. At the other end of the pitch, Raphael Gallé could have equalised for his side but missed an open goal (87'). Therefore, a goalless second half meant a 1-0 win and first victory for the Rothosen in their opening friendly of pre-season.
