1-0 defeat against league leaders Holstein Kiel
Hamburger SV lost 1-0 at home to Holstein Kiel after Rothe scored the game’s only goal. Despite having good chances and playing with a man up for 20 minutes, in the end it was a tough defeat for die Rothosen.
It was an equally bitter as unfortunate 1-0 defeat for Hamburger SV in their home match against Holstein Kiel on Saturday evening (20th April). Die Rothosen put in a decent performance against the league leaders and had several good chances at the start of the second half, but conceded the deciding and rather controversial goal just before the hour mark (59’). Kiel’s Rothe scored following a corner, but HSV keeper Raab was claiming to have been held back. Referee Stegemann went to the screen to check the situation, but decided to award the goal. After Holtby was sent off, HSV launched a final offensive to get back into the game. This brought them a lot of chances, but they were unable to convert any of them into a goal, as Kiel kept their sixth successive shutout by denying the home side few clear-cut chances.
A balanced Saturday evening match...
HSV head coach Baumgart had to make a last-minute change to replace HSV playmaker Benes, who had picked up a knock. Hadzikadunic, who was suspended for the last game, Öztunali, and the recently injured Van der Brempt and Glatzel all returned to the starting XI. And it was Öztunali to whom Hamburg’s first decent chance of the game fell after a quarter of an hour, just after Kiel had a good opportunity to take the lead. Porath’s shot which deflected off Königsdörffer hit the outside of Raab’s post, which caused concern for the home side.
Several efforts were made on his goal 30 minutes, but these attempts from Skrzybski, Holtby and Machino didn’t force Raab into any serious action. At the other end, Glatzel missed once with his head and with his feet, Königsdörffer had a go from a tight angle, and a chance fell to Hadzikadunic from a corner, but he was denied by a late sliding tackle from Erras, as HSV tested Kiel’s goal but to no avail. The biggest moment of the first half came in first-half injury time Becker’s toe poke struck the arm of Reis in the penalty box. Referee Stegemann took a long look at the screen before deciding not to award a spot kick to Holstein. Despite both sides having eight attempts on goal each in what was a balanced first 45 minutes, it ended goalless, and level scores were a fair reflection of the match so far.
... that ended in defeat
Hamburger SV came out with real vigour for the second half, turned up the pressure and pushed Kiel into their own half as they came close to opening the scoring. Rothe and Weiner came to the rescue on the line to keep out Pherai and Glatzel’s efforts and keep it at 0-0. The game’s opening goal then almost came in the 55th minute. A quick counterattack ended with Holtby having a free pop at goal, but Reis slid in to keep the ball out of the net and keep the scores level.
However, HSV went behind four minutes later. After heading the ball away from danger following a corner, it fell to Holtby once again, and as his shot sailed towards the far post, Rothe stuck a foot out and deflected the ball in under the bar. The goal meant that HSV had to work their way back into the game not only against the league leaders, but also against a team that hadn’t conceded a single goal in their last five league matches. However, Baumgart’s side set out to do so and created several chances for themselves, before being helped out when Holtby received a second yellow and his marching orders. This meant that die Rothosen went into the closing phase of the game with an extra man. Baumgart made some attacking changes including Jatta, Dompe and Nemeth, as the hosts gave it one final push. His players gave it their all, but the resolute Kiel defence threw themselves at every cross and every shot made in the remainder of the match. Even when HSV managed to get a shot away, as substitute Suhonen let fly, this flew narrowly past the post. This meant that Kiel secured their sixth successive victory and HSV were made to contend with a bitter defeat in front of a, once again, sold out Volksparkstadion crowd.
