0:2 - HSV miss out on Bundesliga promotion
HSV lost the second leg of the relegation play-off against Hertha BSC at the Volksparkstadion with 0:2 due to two standard situations. Despite a 1-0 win in the first leg, the team missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga.
Hamburger SV lost the relegation second leg against Hertha BSC 0:2 (0:1) on Monday evening (23 May). After their 1-0 win in the first leg, the Hamburg side lost 2-1 on aggregate and missed out on a return to the Bundesliga by a hair's breadth. Berlin's Boyata had already given the visitors the lead in the fourth minute of the match in the sold-out Volksparkstadion, which Plattenhardt extended to 2:0 in the second half (63.). Hertha thus won this unbelievably intense, hard-fought and generally balanced traditional duel and remain in the 1st Bundesliga, while the Rothosen, despite a strong fight to catch up in the league and a first-leg victory in the relegation, ended up empty-handed. Nevertheless, the fans celebrated the team and the coach for minutes on end and gave them a big send-off.

Early Opener...
HSV coach Tim Walter sent in the identical starting eleven that had won the first leg in Berlin 1:0 and thus laid a good foundation for this final. But that was already gone in the fourth minute of the match, as the Berliners took advantage of the first corner kick of the game through Boyata's header for an early 1:0 lead. The overall result was 1-1, meaning that everything was set to zero and the traditional duel in the fight for the last Bundesliga starting place started all over again.
Hertha were much stronger than in the first leg, they let the ball run through their own ranks and, with the lead behind them, took control of the game. But HSV resisted, fought back and kept the game at least even from the 20th minute onwards in this heated match, which was characterised by many passionate duels. However, there were few clear-cut chances on either side, even though a few crosses flew into the penalty area in the final minutes of this incredibly intense first half, but the defences of both teams proved to be watertight. After 45 extremely committed minutes, Berlin went into halftime with a slim lead.

... and a bitter end
After the change of ends, there was immediate drama. Only three minutes after the restart, Heyer was clearly pulled in the penalty area and thus prevented from finishing, but referee Aytekin allowed play to continue and the VAR did not intervene either. So the pressure was on and HSV took advantage of the heated atmosphere in the bubbling Volksparkstadion to continue their attack. The Berlin penalty area was a bit tricky a few times, but it was not enough for the final punch.
Not even after an hour, when Glatzel did not fully catch a Jatta cross on the five-metre line and thus missed the equaliser. Plattenhardt took a free-kick from the right half of the field instead of the expected cross and fired it into the far corner of the net to make it 2-0 in Berlin. HSV now had their backs to the wall. At least one goal was needed to at least equalise the overall score and reach extra time. However, the Walter team had a hard time against a Hertha team that repeatedly disturbed Hamburg's flow of play with ball relays and many forced treatment breaks. Vagnoman had another great opportunity ten minutes before the end and in the six minutes of injury time the balls flew into the Hertha penalty area almost every second, but it just wasn't to be. HSV's outstanding comeback in the league and the great fight in this last game of the season were not rewarded in the end. Nevertheless, after the final whistle, the coach and team were celebrated by the spectators for a strong season and a self-sacrificing fight and bid farewell to this season with great applause.
