“You could see the desire from us both up front and at the back”
There were plenty of matchwinners as HSV beat league leaders Düsseldorf 3-0: Jean-Luc Dompe with his thunderous strike, Robert Glatzel with his brace or Matheo Raab with a series of brilliant saves. At the end of the game the players suggested that it was the collective effort more than anything that accounted for the win.
Robert Glatzel: It was a super game. Everyone gave absolutely everything over the 90 minutes and stuck to the plan. We’re pleased that it worked out the way it did. Dompe’s goal really opened up the game for us. It was obviously from the beginning that weren’t going to get too many chances, so it was important to take the lead early. After that, we were lurking in wait for chances and then sealed the deal late on. There was also an outstanding save from Matheo beforehand. In the end, it was a deserved win.
Sebastian Schonlau: We did a lot of things really well today: We fought and suffered, but also played football and created good opportunities. With that, you can end up with a game like the one today. We know that Düsseldorf had their chances as well, but we also had ours. You could see the desire from us both up front and at the back. We weren’t able to stop everything, but that’s not the point; you have to do everything to defend your goal. We wanted it desperately, and like that you can get a result like this.
Jonas Meffert: We had great control of the game in the first half. We could have scored against to make it 2-0 earlier. Then the game would have been a little bit more relaxed even earlier. They had already looked dangerous from set pieces. Matheo made that one great save. In the second half, there was a period of pressure, but I would’ve also been a bit surprised if the league leaders hadn’t had any chances against us here. Matheo made another brilliant save there as well. In the end, we deserved to get the win.
"Matheo put in an outstanding performance" - Steffen Baumgart
Noah Katterbach: The early goal was very important for us. Dompe scored that brilliantly. We know what a difference-maker he can be. It was a good feeling to start like that. At the back we also saw the kind of goalkeeper that Matheo can be. He saved us in a lot of situations. He shows this level in every training session. We’re lucky to have this kind of quality in the squad.
On his position: Silvan had some back problems this week, so the coach told me fairly early on that I might be an option on the right-hand side if he couldn’t make it. I have played in this position a few times previously. Obviously, it’s a little bit different, but it went well.
Matheo Raab: Things like what happened to me last week are also a part of the game. What’s important is the way that you react to it. I continued to do what I’ve done the whole time. Then sometimes you also get a game like this one today as a goalkeeper. It was an outstanding performance from the whole team today in the way that we defended. Everyone threw themselves into it and gave their all. That’s what made us stand out today.
Steffen Baumgart: We are pleased to be able to come away with the win. It was an even and high tempo game. It was the kind of football that you want to see; there were chances on both sides and 20 strong minutes from Fortuna where we also had to rely on a very good ‘keeper. Matheo put in an outstanding performance. I’m pleased that he stayed the way he is, was focussed and did his job. A lot came together for us today. The squad we have here means that we can line up specifically to target each opponent, that’s why there were the changes to the starting eleven.
Daniel Thioune: My team didn’t lose the game from the defensive side of things. HSV’s quality is there for all to see every week. Put simply, they score a lot of goals, have good individual quality. We lost the game completely in attack. We had high-quality chances, but we obviously have to use these better in order to not come away with a defeat at the end of the day.
