“We’ll take this partial success with us on our way”
The Rothosen came back from 2-0 down to rescue a point in the dying seconds away at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. They were rewarded for a period of sustained pressure in the final 30 minutes, as well as for the spirit they showed. It was clear that not everything had gone to plan up until that point.
Davie Selke: We got our reward for an excellent final 30 minutes. We piled on the pressure as much as we could. We’re happy that we got a late equaliser, even if we would have wanted to win the game. The important thing is that we fought back, showed character and got our reward in the end. It’s an important point for our morale.
Matheo Raab: You always have to prepare as if you’re going to play. That’s why I warmed up as normal. Then, it’s a mental thing to suddenly step in, knuckle down and bring what you’ve been practising in training onto the pitch. This is a great place to play football. A stadium like this with a full house gives me goosebumps. It’s why we play the game. I saw their first goal very, very late. It was the kind of shot that might hit you on the shins, but sadly this time it went through my legs. I’ve fought my way back this season after I was ill for eight weeks. I’ll keep on working hard and give everything to help the team.
“We wanted to get the point no matter what”
Sebastian Schonlau: It was a stunning end to the game. We had loads of shots, created some good chances and eventually forced the equaliser. That’s what we were hoping for when the substitutes came on. It’s not easy to come back from 2-0 down at the Betzenberg. We wanted to get the point no matter what. We were in control in the first half, but didn’t create many chances. In the second period, we lost the ball too often at first, were too open and conceded the second goal. We passed a real test of our mettle today, showed good mentality and didn’t go into our shells. It can definitely be seen as a point gained.
Steffen Baumgart: It was an even game in the first half. We had a lot of the ball to start with, but not many clearcut chances. The opponents defended really well. Then we fell behind, more or less out of nothing, and we were chasing the game. Conceding the second from a very good counterattack didn’t make life any easier, but the lads fought back well. It was important that the substitutes had an impact on the game straight away. We had some good attacks, were dangerous going forward and forced the ‘keeper into two or three great saves. The equaliser at the end wasn’t undeserved. We’ll take this partial success with us on our way, even if we would have wanted more at the start.
