“We need to build on the first half”
A good first 45 minutes in Rostock was followed by a second-half performance that the Rothosen weren’t pleased with. The game eventually finished 2-2, a fair result according to the players. Here is the post-match reaction.
Jonas Meffert: It wasn’t an easy week for us. We experienced a lot with Tim Walter and it wasn’t easy to carry on after that. We did work on a few different things during the week and tried to put them into practice on the pitch. We did this really well in the first half, but not after the break. We should have played with more energy and dynamism in the second half. We also could have made better use of a few attacks in the first period. Had we done that, our lead could have been even bigger. A draw was a fair result in the end.
Immanuel Pherai: We did a few things a bit differently today, especially without the ball. Some of these changes really paid off. However, we need to be more decisive in front of goal. Their second goal was really unlucky. It feels like we lost today.
Sebastian Schonlau: There are two things to take from this game. It was great for me personally to be back involved, even if I only got five minutes at the end. Only drawing 2-2 is not great though. We controlled the game a lot more in the first half, but we didn’t have enough periods of play after the break where we pushed them back and penned them in. We knew that Rostock like to hit a lot of long balls. They have power and are good at that. We simply let them play too many.
Ludovit Reis: We came here to win. If you can’t get the win, the very minimum is to at least take a point. The second half was a bit wild, both with and without the ball. Rostock won a lot of second balls – we have to improve on this next week.
Matheo Raab: I think our first half was really solid. We were compact, something we had said beforehand that we wanted to be. We kept things tight and got our goal. We then didn’t start the second half well and conceded right away. That buoyed the home team. We need to build on our first half and play like that throughout the whole game – it’s no good just having a few good periods.
Robert Glatzel: A draw was a fair result overall. We wanted more from today’s game. The first half belonged to us, we did a few things really well. We were too passive at the start of the second half and didn’t do enough with the ball. The goal should have given us some confidence. Our counter-attacks weren’t good enough, the tempo wasn’t there and we didn’t create enough chances. We effectively gave them one goal and we woke up too late in the end. Although we had a few opportunities to score, we failed to build on the first half and didn’t go for a second goal. That just invites every opponent onto you.
Merlin Polzin: We could see a lot of the things that we were working on during the week, especially in the first half. In terms of our defensive stability, we gave away next to nothing and managed to win the ball back a lot. Therefore, we deserved to go ahead and played like we were hoping to in the first half. However, we didn’t manage to do that anymore in the second half. We missed the chance to go 2-0 up and then conceded the equaliser at the other end. It became a hectic game from that point on. Hansa created a lot of space, which we didn’t defend very well. Consequently, it wasn’t undeserved when they took the lead. However, you could also see that our group never gives up. We’ll take that with us: We always stick up for each other. We’ve created a team spirit that allows us to always keep on going. We’ll also approach next week that way.
Mersad Selimbegovic: We weren’t brave enough in the first half and we didn’t hold the ball up enough up front. HSV controlled the game with the ball and then also went in front. We came out and were far braver in the second half – we didn’t hide and then created the better chances. Therefore, it’s a little bit annoying for us that we only came away with a 2-2 draw at the end of the game. However, we need to always play like we did today, then we’ll continue to pick up points.
