“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot”
The Rothosen were left frustrated by conceding too many goals too easily after their 4-3 defeat against Karlsruher SC on Sunday. We’ve rounded up all the reaction.
Laszlo Benes: It hurts that we kept a clean sheet away from home last time out and then conceded four goals at home today. That can’t happen. Of course we scored three goals and could’ve scored more, but four goals against is simply too many. I’ve got no explanation for it. We handed ourselves the defeat. We’ve got a big goal this season and we need to play better.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: There were too many setbacks to win the game today, especially at the beginning of both halves. The whole team’s defending wasn’t what we were looking for. It took the wind out of our sails. We conceded too many clear goalscoring opportunities and KSC made the most of them. Nevertheless, we’ll keep going. We even showed in the last few games that we can be compact and defend well, which is something that gives us strength.
Jonas Meffert: We defeated ourselves today and we deserved to lose as a result. That hurts twice as much. We need to learn from this quickly and fix our mistakes. Of course we discussed the need to start with more intent during the interval, but then we inexplicably conceded a goal right at the beginning of the half again. Nevertheless, it’s not the end of world. We know that we can do better next week.
"We didn't make the most of our momentum" Tim Walter
Robert Glatzel: All in all, it wasn’t a bad performance from us, but we missed some good chances and conceded some soft goals at the other end of the pitch. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot. It wasn’t enough from us to get a win. Of course we pictured things going differently – it’s really disappointing. However, it would be completely wrong and silly to let our heads drop. There are still 15 games left and we’ll go into them headfirst. However, it’s clear that we can’t drop many more points and need to learn our lessons from today’s game.
Tim Walter: We started the game really poorly and unfortunately made too many individual mistakes again today – that’s why we conceded the goals and it’s what cost us a result. We’ve done better on that front recently and there’s a reason that we’ve already kept eight clean sheets. Nevertheless, we came back and played like a team possessed after getting a goal back, but we needed to make it 3-2, not just to equalise. We didn’t make the most of our momentum. Instead, we made more individual mistakes following the break and ended up losing the game.
Christian Eichner: We started the game really well, but HSV got better and better over time despite our lead. They gained self-confidence during spells of possession and then struck twice with their outstanding quality. We didn’t create any more of our own chances during that phase, but we were able to score straight after the break and then snatch a winner at the end, which we’re obviously really pleased about.
