Until 2026: HSV extendes contract with Anssi Suhonen
The club and the 21 year old Finnish player agree and early contract extension of three more years and contitune the chosen path together.
The continuous path in the squad structure will be continued: After numerous teammates already extended their contracts in recent weeks, Anssi Suhonen has now also signed a new working paper. The 21-year-old Finn has extended his contract, which was originally due to expire in June 2023, by a further three years, thus committing himself to HSV, for whom he has been playing since January 2017, until the summer of 2026. Since his professional debut in August 2021 (DFB-Pokal match in Braunschweig, 2:1), the Finnish U21 international has played in 13 league matches (one goal, one assist), showing his potential.
This is also emphasised by sport director Michael Mutzel, who is pleased about the continuation of the joint cooperation: "Anssi has taken a big step forward in his development this season and has found his place in the team. In his appearances for HSV, but also for the Finnish U21 national team, he has shown his ability on several occasions. We continue to see great development potential in Anssi and are very proud that another player from our academy has made the jump to the pros and committed to HSV for the long term." Suhonen, who moved to Hamburg from his home country just over five years ago, looks to the past and the future in the course of the contract extension: "Since I moved to Hamburg at the beginning of 2017, I have always worked on my development, so I am now particularly pleased about this contract extension. On my way from the youth teams to the pros, the club has always supported me and offered me a sporting and social home with the campus. I would like to repay that with good performances in the future, especially since I feel extremely comfortable in the young team."
From Helsinki to Hamburg
Anssi Tapio Suhonen was born on 14 January 2001 in Järvenpää, Finland, and developed into an internationally sought-after youth player at Käpylän Pallo (district club in Helsinki). In January 2017, the attacking midfielder moved to HSV's youth training centre and from then on played his way through the youth teams. At the age of 18 years and eight months (October 2019), the right-footer made his debut for the Rothosen's regional league team, but his first steps with the professional team were slowed down by a cruciate ligament rupture in July 2020. The 1.75-metre tall technician fought his way back in rehab, however, and established himself in head coach Tim Walter's squad. In addition to 14 competitive games with the professionals, Suhonen also played in three regional league games (three goals) and underlined his promising qualities in all his appearances. He will now demonstrate these in the coming years with the diamond on his chest.
