"The wrong decision too often"
HSV players react to the 2-0 defeat to Fortuna Düsseldorf on Friday evening.
Sebastian Schonlau: It’s a really disappointing evening. We had control but didn't put enough pressure on Düsseldorf. Fortuna defended deep and waited for counterattacks and they opened the scoring with their first counter After that, the game was in their hands. When you start the second half with a red card, it becomes really tough. And even afterwards, something was missing in too many situations. We missed chances to make the right pass or cross at the right moment. Therefore, we couldn't create chances. Simply put, we made the wrong decisions too often in individual situations, even though the opportunities were actually there.
Matheo Raab: We had a lot of possession today, but didn't manage to turn it into an advantage. We weren’t offensive enough and we lacked that cutting edge and all that possession amounted to nothing. You don’t win football games playing like that, home or away. Now we have nine games left, where we have to leave it all out on the field again and reward ourselves for what we work on during the week. We need to get back to work and move on from today. We don't doubt ourselves; we stay positive.
Laszlo Benes: I tried to bring mentality and energy into the game, but still, after the defeatat home, its another defeat on the road. We lacked goal-scoring opportunities, clarity, and precision. That's obviously not enough, even though Düsseldorf defended deep and didn't give us space. We made the wrong decisions too often and made it difficult for ourselves. Overall, it's not enough and nobody is satisfied. Now it's about bouncing back and bringing getting our game back on track.
Steffen Baumgart: It was a game where we had a lot of possession and one where, from my point of view, we could have created different situations, but we missed many moments to create dangerous situations because after winning the ball, we played it sideways or backwards instead of immediately looking to attack. There were also too many individual errors, which prevent you from winning a game like this one. We wanted an intense press; I didn't see much of that. This makes it even easier for a team like Fortuna Düsseldorf. We have a lot of work to do.
Daniel Thioune: The story of this game is simple. We defended well, allowed the opponent a lot of possession in areas that weren't so important to us, and relied on counterattacks. The first one resulted in the opening goal. It was a well-played goal and naturally helped us with our gameplan. In the second half, the early sending-off helped us. We still hardly allowed any chances and then scored the second with another counterattack. In that sense, I can only congratulate the team and have nothing to complain about.
