"The team showed great character”
Trailing 2-0 in Magdeburg having played with a man down for more than hour, HSV fought their way back to a 2-2 thanks to a dominant second half showing. As a result, the team lauded the morale shown this afternoon after full time.
Sebastian Schonlau: We kept on going, regardless of how poorly things were going for us. At half time, we were 2-0 down, a man down, and playing against 25,000 fans. There are very few teams who could put in a second-half performance like we did. We were able to do that today and we should be proud of that. We showed great drive, everyone gave their all for the team. The way we dealt with the setback and the penalties shows our strong team spirit, and that’s what we want to take into the last five matches.
Jonas Meffert: The team showed great character today. It was a more than unfortunate start for us with the red card, the penalty and then the second penalty just before half time. It was all very tough to take, everything was going against us. Despite an unbelievable performance from Reimann, we were fortunately able to get back in the game. We then went all or nothing. Dompe brought a great impulse on when he was introduced, and Bobby’s presence also helped us. I’m pleased for the team, that we got our reward for a good performance. That’s how we need to go into the last few games. Giving up is not an option.
Matheo Raab: We were doing well before they took the lead and had some good chances. After we went behind and lost a man, we needed to sort ourselves out a bit. Despite conceding again, we were able to do that. In the second half, you’d have thought we were playing with an extra man rather than a man down. We need to take the positives from this second half into the rest of the season. Of course, we wanted three points instead of one, but we showed that even when trailing, we can get back into things. That should give us an enormous push.
"The lads went above and beyond what I expect of them" Steffen Baumgart
Steffen Baumgart: Up until the two questionable penalties, it was a balanced game in which both teams didn’t have any golden chances. With my HSV hat on, of course I perceive the penalty scenes a little different. Both decisions were unfortunate. We kept calm at half time, though. In the second half, the lads went above and beyond what I expect of them. We had several gilt-edged chances, and even could have won the game. For this reason, I’m a little bit disappointed, but on the other hand I’m proud of the team’s morale.
Christian Titz: Up until the 65th minute, we controlled the game. After we conceded the first, we lost control somewhat and got a bit sloppy. We’ll have to take the 2-2 at the end of the day, although it was unfortunate to concede a second in injury time.
