Strength in depth key as Aue await
Erzgebirge Aue are HSV’s hosts on Friday night (kick-off 6:30pm CET) to kick off Matchday 20 in the 2. Bundesliga.
Hamburger SV have to deal with a number of key players missing on Friday night’s trip to the Erzgebirgsstadion, hoping to stretch their unbeaten run into double digits against an Aue team strong on their own patch. With temperatures not expected to get much above freezing near the Ore mountain range, conditions under foot less than ideal and a number of new players put into the starting line-up, it will be a serious test of the Rothosen’s mettle in the race for promotion from the 2. Bundesliga.
Focus on the hosts
Erzgebirge Aue are in their fifth successive season in the 2. Bundesliga, and have been in the second tier for the majority of the 21st Century. Hailing from the Ore mountain range near the Czech border in former East Germany, the club are known for its iron spirit on and off the pitch, reflecting the hard-working and unbreakable attitude of the current and former miners in the town. Last season’s seventh-placed finish was their highest in a decade, and ‘Die Macht aus dem Schacht’ are in a similar position heading into Friday’s game in 8th place on 28 points, eight points away from third position but also ten points safe of the relegation play-off place. As has been the way in recent seasons, the Violets’ points total has been based off solid home form, lacking the vocal and passionate home support like all teams this season, but the Erzgebirgsstadion is certainly one of the most feared grounds in the division as an away side. Aue have only lost twice there this season, and beat HSV convincingly on their last trip to Saxony in February last year.
Opposition scouting report
As expected in the packed midfield area of the 2. Bundesliga table, Aue’s form has been patchy since Christmas, and in the past four games have beaten out-of-form Osnabrück and Würzburg, sandwiched by 3-0 losses to promotion candidates Düsseldorf at the Erzgebirgsstadion and most recently last Friday night to Greuther Fürth. Goals have been easier to come by Aue this season, the blossoming of Florian Krüger one of the main reasons for the Violets’ improved outlook heading into the second half of the season. The 21-year-old is tied with experienced striker Pascal Testroet, both notching nine goals and six assists each so far this season, Krüger showing his flexibility by playing in the role of a second striker, winger and midfielder at some point during the season.
The increased production from Krüger has seen a fall-off from experienced duo Dimitrij Nazarov and Jan Hochscheidt, the closest to Krüger and Testroet in terms of goal participation being right-back John-Patrick Strauß with two goals and two assists, showing how much Dirk Schuster relies on his two frontmen for potency in front of goal. Both had a quiet game during the 3-0 HSV win at the Volksparkstadion back in October, but Daniel Thioune is under no illusion that it will be the same at the Erzgebirgsstadion on Friday. Schuster has also shown himself to be tactically flexible last season, the past four games seeing a 5-3-2, 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 all implemented, trying to keep his opposite number on their toes before the game. Aue have injury concerns of their own, with centre-back Florian Ballas also missing for the hosts on Friday.
Daniel Thioune on our hosts: "Aue are a team who are representative of the 2. Bundesliga. They've improved year after year and earned the right to belong in this division. Who knows, they could make an assault on the upper reaches of the table."
Wood the next casualty for injury-hit HSV
After a generally injury-free January, the pile-up of fixtures has seen the Rothosen suffer a number of injuries to key players in the past week and a half. Josha Vagnoman (ankle) and Toni Leistner (thigh) have both been added to the treatment table and will be missing for several weeks, joined by Bobby Wood who injured his knee in training on Wednesday and won’t travel to Aue. Klaus Gjasula (knee) and Rick van Drongelen (ACL) are still missing, the Dutchman able to take part in large swathes of training but the medical staff wanting to be cautious after coming back from such a serious injury.
The positive news for the Rothosen is their unbeaten run stretched to nine games with the convincing 3-1 victory against Paderborn on Saturday at the Volksparkstadion, and coupled with Bochum’s loss to Karlsruhe a day later, means Hamburg have opened up a four-point gap on second place, with 40 points to 36 after 19 games. It is naturally no time to let up, Thioune aware of the challenge that awaits in Saxony. “Especially with the wintry conditions it’s unlikely the surface will be good for playing passing football on,” the 45-year-old explained at Wednesday’s pre-match press conference. “But that’s not excuse for us, there are other ways of scoring goals, and we have to match our hosts’ intensity.”
Matchday facts
No other team in German professional football has a longer unbeaten run than HSV at the moment. Since the defeat to Hannover 96, seven wins and two draws have followed, dropping only four points.
It has been 10 years since Aue won a game against a team top of the league going into the match, the last time this happened was September 2010 against MSV Duisburg. Since then, nine losses and four draws have followed.
Sonny Kittel has been involved in at least one goal in three of his last four games. His direct free-kick against Paderborn also moved him onto seven goals directly from free-kicks from 44 attempts in the 2. Bundesliga, one of the best percentages of all time.
